Profile bio

About Scott Mcfadden

Whether business/people related, or engineering/technical disciplines, I'm able to determine root causes, understand nuance, and I have the knowledge and experience to design & implement elegant solutions. I’ve learned that leadership is about encouraging others to find their own solutions and achieve their own goals. If I do this really well, their achievements help the organization realize its objectives.I began my working life as a jet engine technician and moved on to work on all types and sizes of aircraft from antique aircraft like the De Havilland Chipmunk to Boeing 747’s. I learned about business and leadership the hard way by founding my own company at a young age. This experience inspired me to go back to school. I completed an executive MBA at Queen’s while working for a consumer products manufacturing company, re-engineering the production line based on the Theory of Constraints/Kiazen/Continuous Improvement. Continuous Improvement became a professional as well as personal philosophy. As the first CEO of the privatized Thunder Bay International Airport, I had the opportunity to work with a fantastic team and leverage my broad aviation knowledge, entrepreneurial spirit, and continuous improvement philosophy, and created an efficient, low cost airport with a healthy balance sheet, large capital reserve, excellent reputation in both the Community and industry, and a long list of unique achievements.I love flying and I'm and instrument rated pilot, I retired from racing but enjoy motorcycle riding occasionally especially for a good cause, enjoy sailing, restoring classic aircraft, and saltwater (or any) fly fishing.

Listed skills include Strategic Planning, Aviation, Aircraft, Leadership, and 31 others.

President & Ceo

Thunder Bay International Airports Authority Inc.

First CEO of the then recently privatized organization, I brought a private sector vision to this formally Federally operated Airport. Efficiency, innovation and revenue diversification resulted in 17 years of record growth for the Airport while it remained the lowest priced in Canada and the only International airport in North America with no passenger fee. At Thunder Bay Airport my team and I demonstrated that innovation is not necessarily all about technology and engineering. In addition to a unique financial management strategy, 9MW solar power plant, and low-cost/high service environment, we refined an airport operations methodology that is both more efficient, and provides for a safer airport.A fundamental principle of safety management systems is the notion of allocating finite resources to where they can be most effective in improving safety/reducing risk. "Airport Operation Specialists" (AOS) are trained to perform every aspect of airport airside and groundside operations. Airport emergency first response is one element of this training, along with airfield maintenance/monitoring/reporting, wildlife management, storm response and more. The result is an airport that, at any given time, has more people, more appropriately trained to not only respond to unfolding situations, but operate proactively to improve the safety, efficiency, and four-season availability of the Airport.I'm proud of all we achieved at the Thunder Bay International Airport including the fact that the Airport has never closed due to winter conditions. Innovation at Thunder Bay Airport has provided solutions to many common airport issues. We created subsidiary companies that offer these solutions to clients in Canada, US, Caribbean and overseas, and included in 1999 the world's first internet-based flight information system and in 2014 the world's first Android flight information system.
