  • Codera Ltd
    Lead Consultant
    Codera Ltd Apr 2016 - Mar 2017
    Leeds, United Kingdom
Codera is a software consultancy with a focus on delivery through quality. I led a mixed discipline Agile team, delivering bespoke projects for clients across multiple industries. I worked both off- and on-site with clients across the entire software development lifecycle, from pitching to product delivery. I enjoyed collaborating closely with clients to tease out functional and non-functional requirements, and evaluate technology and design options. I was the first point of contact for any client queries; I regularly reported to business representatives and presented deliverables.During development, I fulfilled the roles of both lead developer and scrum master, running Agile ceremonies and managing iterations. I was responsible for planning and estimation using techniques such as planning poker and 50/90 estimation, and succesfully applied the philosophy of #NoEstimates to several end-to-end projects. As a TDD evangelist I strived to ensure that Codera’s software is thoroughly tested and of the highest quality. I strongly advocated targeted testing, as per Cohn’s test pyramid, and merciless refactoring (including of tests). I gained experience using static analysis tools such as Sonar and JSHint to monitor test coverage, provide feedback on code quality and minimise technical debt.
  • Keysight Technologies
    Technical Lead
    Keysight Technologies Nov 2013 - Apr 2015
As the technical lead of a project to reinvigorate a legacy product, I had a wide spectrum of responsibilities ranging from customer relationship management to project planning and hands-on development. This role required a strong aptitude for all aspects of software development. The software under my remit consisted of several applications and components written in a variety of languages: C, C++, C#, Java VisualBasic and Matlab. Operating in embedded Linux and Windows environments, many development paradigms had been used which I was required to understand and assimilate. After gaining buy-in from internal stakeholders, I deployed an Agile workflow and took responsibility for Sprint planning, management and reporting. Balancing customer and business requirements, I was heavily involved in constructing a development roadmap from which I successfully managed several releases under an aggressive schedule.Due to my long standing interest in IT security, I was also a member of an internal think-tank set up to advise on future cyber security products.
  • Keysight Technologies
    R&D Software Engineer
    Keysight Technologies Nov 2011 - Nov 2013
Working as part of an international team, I applied strong analytical skills and a solid understanding of network protocols to design and create solutions for monitoring user sessions over a variety of link and protocol types. This role required sophisticated data modelling and processing skills in order to store and present large quantities of data appropriately. I was also required to analyse existing data structures and tune performance to exceed customer requirements. My team followed Agile methodology, and I often stepped up to the role of scrum master when required. I am a strong proponent of Test Driven Development, and took part in the initial drive to introduce Behaviour Driven Development to the team using Cucumber. As part of a bespoke bleeding-edge research project, I worked closely with NVIDIA to prototype an autonomous GPU co-processor using CUDA. I later delivered a presentation on the project to several hundred attendees at a technical conference in the USA.
  • Ion Geophysical
    Senior Software Engineer
    Ion Geophysical Jun 2010 - Nov 2011
Working with colleagues and customers on marine survey vessels across the globe, I coordinated full life-cycle software projects while responding to high priority customer support issues, frequently under very tight time constraints. The products I developed were deployed off-shore in a time-critical environment. As such, a high degree of availability was expected and any software changes had to be closely scrutinised. Attention to detail was paramount, plus a passion for thorough testing and high-quality code.
  • Aculab
    Software Engineer
    Aculab Aug 2008 - Apr 2009
In this role, I was responsible for developing solutions to bridge VoIP and POTS/PSTN protocols. This required a good grounding in network protocols plus a strong analytical mind.I worked mostly autonomously from within a very small satellite office, and was required to solve issues on my own using static code analysis and keen debugging skills.
  • Agilent Technologies
    R&D Software Engineer
    Agilent Technologies Sep 2006 - Aug 2008
I joined Agilent Technologies as a graduate in 2006. My development and communication skills were quickly noticed and I was entrusted to develop the division's highest revenue measurement application on the flagship platform. Working closely with colleagues in USA, China and Japan, I successfully applied the skills I acquired through my degree to the workplace, rapidly learning C# and adding innovative contributions to the product’s UI design without compromising the established look-and-feel.I soon became a trusted local knowledge base for anyone using the new platform and acted as a consultant to other teams on several occasions.
