The primary mission for personnel responsible for firefighter rehabilitation is to identify, examine, and evaluate the physical and mental status of fire-rescue personnel who have been working during the emergency incident or a training exercise. Following a proper survey, it should be determined what additional treatment, if any, may be required. The need to implement rehabilitation is based on many factors including, but not limited to, outside temperature, type of work being performed by firefighters, and use of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).Firefighter rehabilitation is designed to ensure that the physical and mental well-being of members operating at the scene of an emergency (or a training exercise) don't deteriorate to the point where it affects the safety of any other members. Firefighting is inherently dangerous in the best of circumstances, and any additional physical or mental stress increases the danger. Studies have shown that core body temperature and heart rate can rise dramatically during firefighting operations Without intervention, firefighters may be at risk for serious acute illness from the extreme conditions and high levels of exertion.

Yakima County Sheriff's Search and Rescue volunteers are ready to respond when people find themselves in imminent danger or distress, such as when a hiker gets lost or injured, an Alzheimer’s disease patient wanders away from home or flooding strikes. We respond to more than 150+ calls a year, both in and outside of our county. Sheriff’s Office Search & Rescue personnel respond to numerous incidents involving lost or injured hikers, hunters and children, down missing aircrafts. SAR volunteers also assist in times of natural disasters like flooding, windstorms and earthquakes.
