Axiom\Silverwire was bought by HP and merged into their fledgling Retail Photo Solutions (RPS) business.RPS wanted to continue with their digital photo kiosk so our role was to work on the RPS solution. Initially, I worked on incorporating our scanner technology into the RPS kiosk but also adding support for the Kodak i30 batch scanner. I got the opportunity to spend a month working at RPS’ US office to take ownership of the automated installation which I worked on for about a year improving the setup time on new installs (which mean more customer stores can be installed in a given time which reduces the service & support cost to RPS). Later I moved into software upgrades and devised the DVD upgrade technology that is still going strong today. Upgrades became our sole responsibility for the duration of our time at HP. The upgrade software was initially developed using Winforms in C# but this was later migrated to WPF. During the last 2 years RPS switched to using Agile Scrum methodology and changed most of our development toolset (source control, issue tracking & build) where I gained extensive experience of Git, Jira, Gerrit & Jenkins.Axiom Connection acquired by Silverwire, then HP in 2006

Joined a small team maintaining and updating the company’s digital photo kiosk software in C++ using LeadTools graphics SDK.Worked on many aspects of the system including:Adding new screens/workflows for specific customer requirements, integrating with several credit card payment systems (both software-only and hardware integrated systems), added support for several flatbed scanners (either specific manufacturer protocols or generic TWAIN & WIA protocols), incorporated image enhance features, investigated face-detection algorithms.Later, was core member of team developing the next generation kiosk software in C#. Primarily responsible for supporting hardware (e.g. scanners, media readers, etc.) and image acquistion of customer images from mediaAxiom Connection acquired by Silverwire, then HP in 2006

Part of team developing software for synchronising phone contacts & calendar info between mobile phones & PC applications such as Outlook, Lotus Notes, etc.Maintained & developed modules for interfacing with a wide range of mobile phones for use with the company's contact synchronisation software. Involved use of RS232 over serial port & socket communications over Infra-red.Was a team leader responsible for build engineer and mentoring junior software engineersWas sole developer responsible for supporting Nokia's soon to be released flagship 7110 phone (also 7160, 7190 in US) with our latest software to include support for synchronising both contacts and calendar events - this involved liasing with their firmware engineers in Denmark to request changes to enable better support for synchronisation.Devised unique mechanism to enable complicated Outlook calendar events (e.g. recurring events with exceptions) to be easily synchronised whilst overcoming limitations in phone's memory & calendar API. Nokia were our biggest customer at the time and the successful sign-off of our driver was a big win for the company.Acquired by Openwave Systems in March 2000Moved into working on core desktop application and was part of team designing and implementing the company's next generation synchronisation software.Visual C++/MFC on Windows 9x\NT4

My primary role was maintenance and new development of PC C++ software for configuration & download of data from the company's range of gas flow meters. Primary OS was MS-DOS but eventually moved to Windows 3.1 when I implemented the company's first Windows applications for configuration of their new products.I also helped out with maintenance of some of the firmware as well as improving the automated hardware test software in QA.I gained experience of Windows SDK programming, embedded C software, interfacing with hardware via serial port, use of hardware test equipment such as digital oscilloscopes and was quite happy to get stuck in with a soldering iron if need be!
