Member of the Forum on Medical and Public Health Preparedness for Disasters and Emergencies

Serve as CLIA Director and fulfill all High-Complexity Clinical Laboratory Director responsibilities as described in 42 CFR 493. Oversee planning, negotiating, organizing, staffing, directing, and evaluating the services of the State Laboratory of Public Health. Coordinate a multi-service laboratory program that analyzes clinical and environmental specimens to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and/or monitoring of individual, community, or environmental health problems. Direct and coordinate the activities of a large technical staff in areas of clinical microbiology, clinical chemistry, environmental sciences, newborn screening, virology/serology, emergency laboratory preparedness and response, and laboratory improvement to ensure successful delivery of laboratory services. Maintain standards of quality in the performance of a variety of laboratory analyses; determine policies, plans, and methodologies for implementation in the laboratory; and set priorities for laboratory work. Serve as liaison with professional contacts in the scientific/academic communities and acts as chief spokesperson for the laboratory.

Appointed Voting Member of the Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children.

Member of the Newborn Screening Technical Expert Panel.

Participate in research on screening newborns for biochemical and genetic disorders, evaluate new policies and procedures, develop technical assistance models, collaborate with public and private partners, and direct clinical laboratory services.

Direct clinical screening program that processes approximately 120,000 specimens annually with 35 staff including 6 direct reports, administer budget, direct method development and validation, maintain compliance with State and Federal regulations regarding testing of clinical specimens, prepare Program reports for review by Department administration and State’s pediatric medical consultants

Supervise principal laboratory technician, maintain quality assurance documentation, author standard operating procedures as required by Federal and State regulations, prepare applications and required reports for grants and cooperative agreements, develop and validate various molecular biology methods for pathogen detection and characterization, test clinical and environmental specimens for pathogens, develop and maintain specimen tracking and results reporting database, develop and maintain reagents and consumables inventory database, develop budget and monitor spending and purchasing in laboratory
