    I led a team that grew from 5 to 20 software engineers with the goal of turning the work of computational biologists into a rapidly-iterating analysis engine. We created The Genome Modeling System, with APIs for data tracking, automated documentation, search, and verifiable reproducibility. We sequenced the first complete cancer genome and published it in Nature in November 2008, then scaled that system to sequence dozens, then hundreds, then thousands of genomes per year. I hired developers for my own group, and also seeded other teams with talent from running an agressive talent recruitment and evaluation campaign. I initiated a program to begin public release of software under open-source licenses (LGPL). By the end of 2012 the ecosystem created had led both programmers and computational biologists to contribute over 1500 shareable components to our analysis system, eclipsing the largest single public project of its kind in quantity by nearly 50%, with approximately the same volume of code.

    As the group I worked in absorbed the other development groups around it, I took an assistant manager position, and led the database and software architecture aspects of a developing large-scale Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). During this time, replacing manual activity with automation led us to be the most cost effective large-scale sequencing center in the U.S., and the second highest funded. I partnered with the head of Systems to convert our operation entirely over to Linux. I introduced automated testing. I oversaw the creation of a data warehousing and OLAP system for reporting. I also oversaw the integration of the first "next-generation" sequencing technologies, starting with the 454, and ending with Illumina (then Solexa) NGS.

They had brought on-line large databases to deal with a data scale up and were hiring professional software engineers to re-architect the organically grown academic systems into something to cope with the scale.I initially brought on-line data management for DNA library preparation to feed into newly developed touchscreen systems. I authored the software application used by management to organize the projects to handle each piece of our assigned human chromosomes. I wrote a software APIs which became the exclusive way for the software system to access their large Oracle database for the following six years.
