As a volunteer in the South Africa teaching and childcare program, I spent my days traveling to the Township of Capricorn just outside of Cape Town. In this devastatingly poor township, I was a member of a group of volunteers that would visit the schools and childcare centers to work with the children. These children, due to their living conditions, are exposed to a significant amount of crime, drugs, sex, and poverty at a very young age. Our purpose was to ensure that the children were attending school and childcare so that they would not be left wondering the streets of the township unsupervised, which is the case for many. At each school and childcare center, we would play games, sing songs, create arts and crafts, and teach proper hygiene. In the schools we tutored and guided students through their homework assignments and maintained a safe learning environment.

As a member of the Youth Services Department at the Cleveland Housing Network, I was in charge of coordinating the Summer Youth Employment Program for the inner-city youth of Cleveland. These students took part in a program in which they were employed at local business, police, and fire stations for six weeks in order to gain professional experience. At the conclusion of the internship, depending on how well they did, they could have the opportunity for a full or part-time position.I also organized the Cleveland Housing Network Youth Career Expo. I produced a Youth E-Newsletter that was sent to all CHN residents. This Expo included representatives from local businesses, universities, colleges, retail stores, and healthcare providers.The Expo served as an opprtunity to develop networking skills and meet with potential employers and universities.

As part of this internship with the Cleveland Foundation, I attended weekly professional development seminars at non-profits in the Greater Cleveland area. I served as the assistant coach for a youth baseball team during the summers of 2014-2016. I started out with the 9-year-old and under team and remained with them through the 11u level in consecutive summers. This position included organizing and running practices, coaching in games and tournaments, and coordinating workouts and try-outs. A major focus was creating a positive environment focused on cultivating teamwork and accomplishing team goals.In my time, we won a number of local tournaments and earned a league championship.

As a volunteer with IVHQ, I would travel to different street markets throughout Quito each day of the week. Due to the financial circumstances of the families that work in the street markets, many of their children would work in the markets alongside their parents instead of attending school. I was a part of a volunteer group that set out to change this by essentially setting up a daycare outside of the different markets. After setting up a tent, we would bring the children out from the markets to play games, sing songs, create arts and crafts, and learn proper hygiene techniques. This enabled the kids to just be kids by allowing them to express themselves creatively, play actively, and learn properly in a safe environment. For the street children that were lucky enough to attend school, we would tutor them and guide them on their homework assignments.
