Polar bears are listed as an endangered species. The USGS provides the federally funded scientific research required for the Department of Interior's (DOI) management of the polar bear species. Upon my arrival, there was a need for a comprehensive information system to allow the collection and management of all scientific data regarding polar bears. I used my interpersonal skills to elicit system requirements from field scientists, database end users, and management stakeholders. I used a combination of hardware, software, and database development skills to prototype and build a real-time, spatially explicit field data collection system.The new system uses a SQL repository and a service oriented architecture (SOA) to efficiently manage Global Information System (GIS) methods and improve the organizations overall content management processes. Loading the system required the development of custom software to extract, transform, and load (ETL) the information compiled from over 50 years of historical data. This data was stored in various disparate sources, which included an Access database, Excel spreadsheets, XML, and flat-files.

The system included aspects of customer ordering and scheduling delivery of water for agricultural use.
