Providing software solutions to clients of Direct Technology. Updating existing systems and creating new systems to solve a variety of problems.

Providing senior development work as well as technology leader for small teams providing customer facing diagnostic tools and systems. My team will be writing tools and applications in support of new and existing customer initiatives for Microsoft CSS. Specifically an automated chat system allowing customers to interact with support assets in an IM like setting. My role has been the design and development of the content management system to support the client side application. I am also responsible for the design and development of an analysis system to track content success. Results from the system audits will be used to improve existing content and identify areas that need new content created.

Currently leading a team of four Software Development Engineers with the occasional contigent staff as budget allows. My team is responsible for the design and development of internal tools to support the Knowledge Management strategy for Microsoft CSS. Transition work is underway to move into the customer solution space providing online self help solution through the Knowledge Base or through Windows Error Reporting. All of this is under the FixIt brand.We are a managed code development shop using C#, .NET Framework 3.x, ASP.NET and SQL Server.

With a reorganization into a true engineering group our titles were changed from Application Developer to Software Development Engineer. My work remain unchange for the most part. I took on the job of lead developer with no direct reports in 2001. This truly was one of the best jobs ever. I had the authority of a Lead with a team of developers to direct and I didn't have to write their reviews. This proved to a be a great opportunity for me to learn about application design and implementation. I was no longer just writing code, I was setting priorities, managing scope and ultimately responsible for deployment into a production. Credit for the success of the team goes to the strong support I received from my manager at that time. I learned a lot about what it takes to be a good manager.

My transition off of the phone began my career as a developer at Microsoft. My official title would not change for nearly five more years but in reality I was an Application Developer on loan from PSS/CSS to MSIT. The work I was doing was unofficially classified as a SkunkWorks group. I joined a small team of developers and like minded folks in building all manner of applications and tools for use in and round PSS/CSS. My formal training as a Microsoft developer was a series of rapid development projects ranging from simple tools to complex data management applications.Smart Scheduler was updated from VB to a Win32 C application. This particular codebase is still in production today.Along the way we discarded VB for the most part and concentrated on C development, then C++ and COM components. With the introduction of COM we began creating application following a three tiered architecture model; UI, COM Service, SQL Database.

I was hired fresh out of college by Microsoft to support MSDOS 5.0. Windows 3.0 and beta version of Windows 3.1 were added to the list of support operating systems over the summer of 1991. In early fall of 1991 myself and two other support engineers took on the job of automating the delivery of phone schedules using Excel and VB. This application was further improved as a standalone VB application that provided engineers with real time schedules. We called this application Smart Scheduler. We believe to be the first application at Microsoft and possibly elsewhere to use an automatic update system for deploying updated bits to user machines. We certainly had never seen it done before. We missed an opportunity to patent, or at least go down that road. In late November 1991 it was decided that it was more important for me to work on Smart Scheduler than to answer phone calls. A developer was born.
