When I first started with Butterfly, they were a small residential voice over IP service provider. One of my most memorable achievements during my time at Butterfly was being directly involved in the planning and implementation of a Cisco-based service provider network that would be used to provide ADSL and VDSL internet service. This was all in preparation for a push into the business sector where we would be offering a hosted voice over IP service bundled with our internet service. This allowed us to provide end-to-end quality of service ensuring excellent call quality, which is a must for business.While wearing the software engineer hat, I developed a number of custom applications that were used in house. An example is a system that allowed management and monitoring of remote endpoints such as an IP phone or modem. This was developed around specifications provided by our hardware vendors or a device API if one was available. This allowed the company to provide a high level of support by giving technicians the ability to directly interact with the remote endpoint for troubleshooting and configuration purposes. This significantly improved the efficiency of our support team as it allowed them to see settings and statistics directly or make configuration changes without having to rely on the customer to either relay information or follow technical instructions which avoided any possible errors.Core responsibilities:- Cisco based DSL ISP network design, implementation and management.- Linux based server planning, deployment and management.- Management of VoIP service provider network and platform.- Implementation of automated customer billing system to replace legacy methods.- Documentation and record keeping of all network and service related information.- Data center network planning, implementation and management.- In-house support of hardware and software required for business operations.- Citrix Xen and VMware ESX platform management.
