I have trained at the Center for Biofilm Engineering of Montana State University, Harvard Medical School, and the Harvard University Center for Nanoscale Systems.

Co-author with Roberto Kolter of Life at the Edge of Sight: A Photographic Exploration of the Microbial World

Along with Roberto Kolter and the Harvard Museums of Science and Culture, I created and co-developed two major exhibitions at the Harvard Museum of Natural History, World in a Drop: Photographic Explorations of Microbial Life, and Microbial Life: A Universe at the Edge of Sight. I continue to serve as Guest Curator of Microbial Life. I designed and produced living materials for exhibits containing live microbes, including an oversized Winogradsky column, live bacterial colonies in Petri plates, and a microscope demo station staffed by volunteer science communicators. I co-lead the organization and training of a diverse volunteer pool of Boston-area scientists to staff the live-demo station. I also contributed a majority of original photographic, video and interpretive content for these exhibitions.

Early along in my PhD research around 10 years ago, I began to specialize in microbial biofilms as a visiting researcher at the Center for Biofilm Engineering (CBE), a part of Montana State University. At the CBE, I trained in growth systems and microscopy of microbial biofilms and created the foundation of my PhD dissertation research on biofilm formation and dynamics in the salt-loving microorganism Haloferax volcanii, a halophilic archaeon.
