On returning to Dynamically Loaded I was tasked with the development of new markets and developing a new strategic approach for the company. So far I have developed a new strategic vision for the company and built a new client base for their unique positioning products. Key clients include, Sustrans, the University of Glasgow, Cisco, and the European Space agency. To achieve this I initiated a company wide rebranding, and sales strategy.Over this period I have also lead the productisation of the company’s technology, including Oxygen - a big-data crowdsourcing platform, Pitchstone - a unique outdoor positioning system for IoT devices, and Sillstone - an indoor positioning technology for mobile devices. Oxygen uses key open source technologies including, Linode, Linux, Apache, NoSQL, (MongoDB), PHP, and Laravel. The mobile SDKs built upon its comprehensive RESTful APIs are native Objective-C, Android, and PHP.Working with Sustrans I also led the development of mobile working solutions for improving the process of surveying the UK’s cycle network on both iOS and Android. Critically this application was built upon Dynamically Loaded’s new location- based asset mapping platform Oxygen.
Lead Architect
I led the innovation programme in the TSB’s £24million Future City Demonstrator in Glasgow. I directly managed £2.7 million and advised on a further £8million and regularly presented to senior stakeholders including executive board members. During this programme, I promoted modern software development and design approaches. This has significantly contributed to moving the organisation from a traditional waterfall based delivery model to a more iterative and agile, user-centred approach.Day-to-day I led an interdisciplinary team of 15 people internally whilst also procuring the external services of several SMEs. This diverse team include mobile developers, web developers, business analysts, data analysts, graphic designers, and service designers. During this programme my team delivered 3 mobile applications, the MyGlasgow app–an app for location- based incident reporting (e.g. dog fouling, lighting faults, and potholes), the Glasgow Cycling app and the Glasgow Walking app–both of which were designed to promote active travel and the exploration of the city. The team also delivered a new open data strategy and platform, a web-based dashboard framework, and a series of engagement events that pushed Glasgow to the forefront of the SMART City agenda throughout the UK. The technologies built upon include, CKAN, Apache, PostgreSQL, PostGIS, MySQL, Solr, Wordpress, Leaflet, Azure, Hadoop, and Spark. The programme also promoted the extensive use of open standards including, GeoJSON, 5-Star Open Data, and RDF.I also drove the most modern software development methodologies by developing stories through a series of short sprints using Scrum and Kanban.
Lead Architect & Founder
As a solutions architect, I led the delivery of a number of large scale mobile software products and the development of international business. The largest products I delivered were Moodagent - with over 10 million downloads, and WiFiFoFum - with over 1.5 million downloads. Moodagent is a mobile, mood-based, music recommendation system developed by Syntonetic. I managed an internal team of 4 mobile systems developers and liaised with the Syntonetic design team to ensure their vision was realised.WiFiFoFum is a Dynamically Loaded product that was the world’s most popular Wi-Fi scanning tool, used by senior network engineers in a number of the worlds leading bluechip organisations including Mozilla, Siemens, and Broadcom. I successfully led the organisation through a major change in business model from app sales to data sales securing $500,000 of new revenue through the relationships built with Broadcom.Other iOS products include SBI–an app specifically designed for the delivery of executive leadership content for the Centre for Creative Leadership’s programme on constructive feedback using their Situation, Behaviour, Impact (SBI) model, Rangers Football Club–this was the second ever football app in the store after Arsenal and delivered fixtures, live scores, squad lists, and Rangers TV. My role was very much hands on with most of these apps, leading client relations as well as the development.
