Managing a small team of reporters, mostly on evening shifts, I am responsible for making sure the PA newswire leads the news agenda for the following day. The role involves reacting quickly to breaking news and making rapid decisions, often under pressure, as well as commissioning stories and organising resources for diary and off-diary events.

My duties were split between general reporting, including covering the courts, and having oversight of the newswire on evening desk shifts. As a reporter, I was one of many at PA who raced to the scene of the Westminster terror attack in March 2017 and took down eyewitness accounts, including breaking the first details of casualties. I was also PA’s reporter in Russia covering the World Cup, filing hard news and off-beat stories around the tournament each day. And I was on newsdesk on the night of the Manchester bombing, coordinating PA’s coverage throughout the night.

A varied role in which I was regularly required to adapt quickly to cover subjects, including politics, crime, science and showbiz. Much of my time as a general reporter was spent covering the courts, where I was expected to file quickly and accurately. Highlights of my time as a general reporter included being in Downing Street when David Cameron resigned and Theresa May gave her first speech as Prime Minister.
