Co-created a new non-profit, EarthSenseAI, focused on accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence within the environmental/conservation domain.

Progressive AI Consulting provided expertise and programming services related to artificial intelligence technologies. Projects included data analysis for next-generation DNA sequencing of HLA genes and business planning for cloud-based AI services.

Demonstrated ability to work with the changing requirements common in data analytics applications and to produce results to meet deadlines in a dynamic environment. ◆ Provided technical oversight of a high-visibility flight optimization project that was the basis for a new data analytics product offering. Made key contributions to the most challenging components of the development effort, including feature construction, design of machine learning algorithms, and the solution architecture. Delivered solutions ahead of schedule and enabled rapid demonstration of the value of the new product to prospective customers. ◆ Assumed leadership of software development for multiple machine learning and data mining projects. Rapidly learned the existing code base and implemented key new algorithms in handling large scale streaming data. ◆ Mentored junior team members, including tutoring them on the existing software, providing leadership in meeting customer deliverables, and assisting them in algorithm design and debugging.

Most recent work in autonomous systems involves human-machine teaming utilizing dialog-based speech interaction and automated planning methods. The project has produced demonstrations showing the application of these technologies to airplane systems and to factory robotics. Prior activities in the area of autonomous systems development have included path planning for air and ground vehicles, multi-vehicle task allocation, obstacle ontologies for autonomous cars, aggregation of information from distributed sensors, and human/robot teamwork.Recent responsiblities have included original research and development, leading multi-person development teams, collaboration with university and corporate research partners, building application prototypes, proposal development, and strategic technology planning. Project leadership activities have included management of small development teams, as well as a leadership position in a development activity involving dozens of people. University research interactions, including with CMU, Stanford, and MIT, have involved formulating projects, managing and guiding the research, and transitioning the results into Boeing.

Senior researcher achieving the position of Associate Technical Fellow in 1997. • Managed and coordinated numerous projects in the field of neural networks. Led development of an extensive software library, written in C, for simulation of neural network architectures, sensor and data processing, and analysis tools for evaluating performance for different applications. Built graphical user interfaces for UNIX and Windows environments for demonstrating the application of neural networks to different Boeing problems. Applied neural network technology to engineering and manufacturing problems, including design retrieval, image classification, factory machine monitoring, and novelty detection. • Led the development and deployment of a production system for geometry-based retrieval of engineering designs using neural networks. This system, known as the Neural Information Retrieval System (NIRS), was used to locate parts with similar geometry so that they could be reused, saving significant money. The system used methods for geometry representation and vector matching derived from neural network techniques for clustering part geometry and was significantly more capable than any system available outside Boeing.• Developed a process flow simulator in Smalltalk for a program designing a reusable space launch system with significantly lower costs than existing rockets.

Developed methods for detecting intron/exon boundaries in DNA sequences using artificial neural networks. This was an extremely exciting position for me and inspired my interest in applying artificial intelligence methods to solve challenging real-world problems.
