CurrentAs Assistant Director of IT Services at Asbury University, I work closely with the Assistant VP of IT Services to shape the department's vision and direction. As a senior member of the IT Services Management Team, I help lead the department in developing new practices, assessing IT policies with a security focus, and recruiting top IT talent.A crucial part of my role is researching, reviewing, and evaluating vendors for new products and services, balancing costs with value. As Network Manager, I oversee the Network Team, comprising 3 Systems Administrators and 1-2 student workers. Our team is responsible for managing and maintaining the university's server infrastructure, including Windows, Linux, and macOS servers, email services, file storage, and specialty servers. We also manage the campus telephone system, cable TV system, and all infrastructure cabling.Additionally, we administer and maintain the network core routers, edge network switches, and deploy institutional smartphones. A critical aspect of my role is managing the network firewall to ensure security and traffic flow between our internal network and the internet. I also evaluate and implement vendors, tools, and resources to enhance campus network security, including cloud-based and client-side solutions.I coordinate infrastructure cabling projects, new equipment deployments, server installations, and software upgrades. I work with approved vendors to scope, quote, and secure funding for new projects, ensuring timely and proper completion. Furthermore, I review and recommend new IT-related products, services, and vendors, overseeing purchasing and implementation.
Network Systems Administrator
As Network Systems Administrator, I was responsible for creating, maintaining, and monitoring the campus data network and its resources. I performed routine server backups and archiving, and researched and implemented new technologies to support academic and administrative needs. As the campus grew, I expanded the network infrastructure by implementing new wireless and wired networks.I improved network monitoring and tracking by utilizing tools like Intermapper, Spiceworks, and Solarwinds. I also established real-time email and SMS alerts for network devices, replacing audible alerts in the datacenter. Additionally, I developed new backup strategies, including a disk-to-disk-to-tape method, and created custom scripts for large file server migrations.My role also involved managing network account creation and maintenance processes. As the Help Desk Technician I maintained all college-owned Macintosh and Windows based computers. I provided technical support to college faculty/ staff and for campus Smart Classroom technology. I configured new computer images with custom settings and software for faculty/ staff and lab computers. I was also able to mentor and assist student workers within my department.One of the key improvements I made in this role was testing and implementing a new network based method to assist in the mass imaging of Apple Macintosh computer labs. I continually leveraged Mac OS X and Unix scripting to help streamline the configuration process to make it more efficient. Working with the Network Manager and with the assistance of an Apple Engineer we tested and implemented Active Directory binding of all campus Mac computers. Prior to this time frame binding Mac computers to Active Directory was not possible.
