Profile bio

About Scott Slattery

I'm a molecular cell biologist, with experience in diverse areas of research and testing. A common theme throughout that career has been a focus on the development and application of cell-based assays, most recently for chemical and pharmaceutical safety testing and mechanism-of-action investigation. I have broad technical experience in the fields of molecular and cellular biology, which includes special expertise and interest in cell-based assay development, quantitative microscopy, and high-content imaging. I have applied these skills over my career to investigate kinase signaling in mitosis, to create novel fluorescent FRET-based biosensors to study Rho GTPase signaling during cell motility, and to develop diverse assays for monitoring cell health effects caused by chemical and pharmaceutical exposures. My experience includes scientific leadership and personnel management. At ScitoVation, I was proud to lead a team of talented laboratory scientists working to advance in vitro toxicity testing approaches. Many of my projects have been highly collaborative. I have worked effectively across disciplines with computational biologists, modeling scientists, chemists, and programmers, sometimes in supportive roles and at other times leading collaborative projects.

Listed skills include Cell Culture, Fluorescence Microscopy, Cell, Microscopy, and 13 others.

Healthy cells produce reactive oxygen species (ROSs) through normal physiological processes. However, an elevated level of ROSs produces an oxidizing cellular environment, which can be highly damaging to proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Therefore, ROSs are combated by cellular antioxidant defense systems, which maintain a reduced cellular environment..

Cells are morphologically dynamic, and many are highly motile. Such morphodynamics is required for normal physiology, and can also be hijacked in pathologies such as metastatic cancers. The actin cytoskeleton provides the forces underlying most cellular morphodynamics, and the Rho GTPases are central molecular regulators of the actin cytoskeleton..

Interim Manager And Assay Development Specialist, Integrated Microscopy Core

Houston, Texas, US

During this short-term postdoctoral experience in the laboratory of Michael Mancini in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, I acted as Manager and Assay Development Specialist of the Integrated Microscopy Core facility, in addition to doing research on automated microscopy-based cell cycle analysis and steroid receptor co-activator function..

Oct 2009 - Jun 2010

Predoctoral Fellow

Houston, Texas, US

As a graduate student working on a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology in the laboratory of Bill Brinkley, I studied the regulation of mitosis and cell division by Aurora family kinases. My work demonstrated that Aurora Kinase C can regulate mitotic progression. In the process of my project, I developed a cell cycle progression assay that uses a novel.
