We had four successful flights of our rocket, LauncherOne, and took 33 satellites to orbit. But our business plan failed to attract enough investors and Virgin Orbit went bankrupt. As a small company employees often wore several hats. I wrote requirements, design documents, and the Python prototype of the Autonomous Flight Safety System (AFSS), as well integration tests for the C++ flight software. I also did various supporting analyses with MATLAB. Systems safety work included establishing clear zones for hazardous operations based on Quantity Distance (QD) calculations, launch and engine test procedures, and being a launch operator in the Mission Control Center (MCC). Also, FAA, NASA, and MIL standards, licensing, and certification.Hazard analysis and mitigation, risk analysis, FMEA, fault trees, Ishikawa Fishbone Diagrams, 5 whys. Root Cause Corrective Actions for failures, mishaps, and near-misses.

I am currently doing everything from business processes to web development (except for some areas like art that are contracted out).
After decades of aerospace work, including wonderful times contributing to space science, I decided it was more pressing for me to do something that helps our own planet. And so my energies are now devoted to energy efficiency and related areas. At Red Peak Engineering we are developing smart plugs (electrical outlets) and switches with low power RF communication to allow remote control and energy measurement. I am doing system engineering, web development (Git, JavaScript, ColdFusion, CSS, HTML5, Python), embedded software (C code for NXP Jennic JN5148), management, business planning, marketing, and handling legal issues.

Developed the flight software for the Cassini mission to Saturn star tracker and attitude (pointing) controller, from initial design through in-flight maintenance. Given a big computer this could be relatively easy. However, the on-board computer for these functions only has a mega-word of memory and runs at a megahertz, so I had squeeze the algorithms down an order of magnitude to get them to fit. The code is reliable enough to run years at a time without reboot, which is important for a spacecraft over an hour one-way light time from earth. Developed fault protection and guidance and control functions for the SMAP earth orbiting satellite. Performed systems engineering for the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle heat shield, and the Altair Lunar Lander guidance, navigation, and control system. Led the command sequence block development effort for Spitzer Space Telescope. Led the SIM (Space Interferometry Mission) fault protection effort, also was part of the Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) team. Conducted internal audits to assure compliance with ISO 9000.
Developed software for avionics and support systems. Performed systems integration and test. Also did simulations, analysis, quality assurance, and systems engineering.
