Day-to-day running of a bioenergy project development company from start-up, incorporating technology partnerships, project initiation and finance, capital raising, Board reporting, contract management, engineering & design, strategic planning, business development and procurement.

Board role focused on commercialisation of UAM Tec's groundbreaking underwater mapping technology suite and data applications, fundraising and positioning the company for growth. Initial focus was ultimately set on applications for the water utilities sector in order to prove up and refine the platform, before branching out into other sectors, including possibly defence, offshore oil & gas, offshore renewables, telecommunications, tourism and research.

Engaged as a key consultant to provide strategic direction and drive development of the CRC campaign together with UTAS-nominated bid Directors, Professor Stewart Frusher and Associate Professor Irene Penesis. Had primary responsibility for engagement of industry and research partners, both domestic and international, with additional tasks including preparation of the bid prospectus and other marketing materials, contractor management, stakeholder liaison, fundraising, application drafting and development, input into research design and budgets, as well as representation of the bid in major forums.Successfully raised $78m cash and $180m of 'in-kind' contributions from domestic and international partners drawn from the aquaculture, offshore engineering and renewable energy sectors, together with a research consortium led by The University of Tasmania. As Acting CEO, was also responsible for preparing and formally presenting the bid to the CRC Assessment Committee at Stage 2 in February 2019 on behalf of the bid consortium, at which the CRC was essentially pitching for a $70m investment by the Commonwealth.This CRC bid was submitted under the 20th CRC funding round and was ultimately successful in launching an innovative and highly competitive $328.7m, 10 year industry-led research project, with the announcement made on Tuesday 16 April, 2019.

An engagement relating to applied research into added-value applications for aquatic biomass and waste beneficiation. Involved supervision of research work and engagement in commercialisation activities, as appropriate.

Provision of technical and specialist advisory services to the ARENA CFO and Team Lead - Business Development, to assess prospective Funding Agreements by:• Communicating, liaising and negotiating the development of commercially-oriented transactions and sustainable relationships;• Facilitating presentations to the ARENA Advisory Panel (akin to an investment committee) and the ARENA Board, as necessary; and• Leading strategic initiatives to drive efficiency and contract negotiation best practices.

The purpose of the Panel and its members was to provide advice to the ARENA Executive on the following matters:• assessing the merit of funding applications (including expressions of interest and full applications) and making investment recommendations to the ARENA Executive & Board;• assessing the merit of requests from ARENA grant recipients for material variations to projects underway, as well as conducting reviews of individual project activities, particularly with regards to the completion of agreed milestones;• providing advice and assistance in determining the eligibility of Expressions of Interests (EOIs) against the eligibility criteria in the relevant Programme Guidelines;

AquaTrophic was a life sciences venture focused on the application of integrated aquatic biomass cultivation techniques to deliver a range of high value end products and bioremediation services. As Founder & MD of this start up, tasks primarily included:• Research management, encompassing IP development and commercialisation activities with key university partners• Business, financial and strategic planning• Fundraising• Product development

The appointment at JCU involved collaboration with School staff and students on research projects for the large scale culture of micro- and macroalgae and its processing for a variety of downstream applications. This included assisting with student co-supervision, research publication and development of end-use products derived from algae biomass, including biofuels, carbon abatement products, biological wastewater treatment techniques and nutraceuticals.

Consulting role, involving strategy, engineering, technology and scientific research to unlock new opportunities for innovation and commercialisation. Clients included:• Parsons Brinckerhoff - specialist input as a sub-contractor into a technical and commercial due diligence activity for a major ARENA funding application, involving document and design reviews, reporting, extensive interviews and an international site visit.• The Advanced Manufacturing Co-operative Research Centre (AMCRC) - Acting Program Leader, Program 4: Innovation in SME Engagement, involved management of the Manufacturing Productivity Networks (MPN) scheme that was designed to engage industry with Additive Manufacturing/3-D printing pilot projects, in partnership with RMIT University.• AquaTrophic - business planning for an emerging sustainable aquaculture venture.• Utilitas Limited - project and business development for the application of world-leading anaerobic digestion 'waste to energy' technology for bioenergy and fertiliser production.

The MBD/James Cook University (JCU) partnership under the Advanced Manufacturing Co-operative Research Centre (AMCRC) was a $25m program primarily focused on bridging the gap between scientific research and commercial reality for a promising new biomass resource (algae and bacteria). Projects and accountabilities included:• Guiding the co-operative scientific research program relating to microalgae, macroalgae and bacterial biotechnology applications.• Strategic planning & stakeholder liaison• Budget oversight and periodic management reporting.• Intellectual Property (IP) management & co-ordination.• Staff coaching and development, as well as contractor management.• Knowledge management to enable more effective capture of research outputs and collaboration across cross-functional teams and scientific/engineering disciplines. • Applied scientific assignments and business development with external clients, such as Queensland Nickel Industries, Incitec Pivot, Bestlan and Pacific Reef Fisheries.

Reporting to the Clients and Markets Leader for the Energy, Mining and Industry (EMI) Group with sales revenue of ~$180m p.a., this role was primarily focused on project management, sustainability consulting and business development activities relating to delivery of engineering projects across Australia and New Zealand. Projects and accountabilities centered around providing innovation input into engineering design on projects ranging from small to very large scale. Examples of project involvement include:• Co-ordination of the National Industry Engagement and Regional Development Plans for a shortlisted Solar Flagships (Thermal) Project.• Project management of a major upgrade to a secure, National Defence facility in Canberra that needed to proceed without interruption to core operations.• Co-ordination of a ‘pro-bono’ renewable energy study for the Flowerdale Recovery Committee in the wake of the 2009 ‘Black Saturday’ bushfires.• Facilitation of the Sustainability Team and design workshops relating to the Western Ring Road (M80) Upgrade, with alliance partner Thiess/John Holland.• Managing the sustainability design initiatives relating to the relocation of Parsons Brinckerhoff’s own office in Melbourne, with a targeted 5-star GBCA office fit-out rating.• Project management of an innovative infrastructure concept design activity for Parks Victoria, investigating sustainable redevelopment of the heritage-listed Mt Buffalo Chalet in northern Victoria.• Life cycle assessment modeling of various technical solutions for CO2 re-use reviewed on behalf of the Global Carbon Capture & Storage Institute (GCCSI).• Liaison with land developers, D&C contractors, local government and utilities to draft a vision for new urban developments on Melbourne’s fringe that focused on energy, water and waste efficient infrastructure and planning.

Sole trader entity, working in partnership with organisations to assist in the development of sustainability education, strategy and innovation programs. Clients included ANZ Bank, Orica, Macquarie University, Sydney Capital Partners and Edge Environment.

Included ongoing development and delivery of an intensive 7.5 credit point (ECTS) course entitled, 'Introduction to Sustainable Engineering' in partnership with the Blekinge Institute of Technology in Sweden. Each year this involved a mixture of streamed online and 'live' lectures given on the ground in Kunming, China at the Kunming University of Science and Technology (English only).

Supported the 'Master of Strategic Leadership Towards Sustainability' programme within the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Duties included tutoring, drafting and marking assignments and examinations, writing research applications as well as undertaking curriculum development and managing related marketing and communications. Also included supervision of Master's thesis work and editing of the course text book.

In support of the Senior Vice-President of Corporate Affairs, conducted seminal research and reported on an emerging CSR partnership with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in The People’s Republic of China.

Reporting to the Global VP of Sales & Marketing, managed corporate marketing activities to develop a global brand for business consulting and advisory services. Key activities included brand management and corporate communications, business development, managing web site development and assisting in the creation and relationship management of strategic alliances.

This role involved liaison with regional management to design and co-ordinate strategic marketing initiatives to support business development. A significant achievement included the management of several brand transitions across Asia-Pacific following their acquisition (see below).

Working in direct consultation with senior partners, provided support and assistance in repositioning the business for growth. The firm was subsequently acquired by The Empower Group Ltd (an independent subsidiary of Manpower, Inc) in 2000 and later merged into Right Management Consultants.
