I’ve always loved to build things. From skyscrapers built out of wooden blocks to cityscapes built out of Lego the desire to build has been a constant for as long as I can remember. It’s no surprise that writing software scratches that same itch. I’ve traded physical building materials for logical constructs and, of course, I still love it.I’m proud of the things I’ve built. I got my start as a professional software engineer working for a small company maintaining their in-house chat and video systems that were based on C++ and C# with no real development process to speak of. Fast forward 12 years and I was the lead for 3 separate teams, had installed an agile process and had expanded the code repertoire to include Java, Go and Objective C. During that same time span I learned the importance of scale as traffic to these systems grew from thousands of unique visitors per day to millions.More recently I’ve set out an adventure to build even bigger things. In 2019 I joined Hulu’s Live Video Pipeline team where I’ve been putting my building skills to use on the systems that drive the largest digital linear television community in the country. At Hulu I’ve learned the importance of end to end testing and observability of system health. Thanks to my work at Hulu I’ve learned that I don’t just want to build things. I want to build things that work really well. I want to build things that other people love to use.I’m a firm believer that communication is the foundation of success for any team and organization that builds things with software. Communication is how a team shapes their process to fit their needs via feedback during team ceremonies. Communication is how ambiguity is removed from the process and is crucial to completing projects on time.I guess you could say that software isn’t the only thing I like build; I also like to build relationships through strong communication skills.Primary Languages: Go, C++, PythonInterests: High Availability, Observability, Scalability
