I help implement software that airlines use to manage their operations. I learned and refined a custom API that enforced airline-specific rules for a pilot-facing web app.My second project was in longer-term planning, 1-2 years before the day-of-operations, anticipating pilot training needs and planning future capacity. Pilot training often has a cascading effect as a series of junior pilots move up when an opening appears at a senior level.In Q3 of 2022 I moved from Senior Software Solution Developer to Client Solution Owner (CSO). This is similar to a Scrum.org Product Owner, but we work so closely with specific airlines that each implementation has a client-specific product owner (aka CSO). I am leading our implementation of a planning module to manage vacation, subject to detailed contractual rules, that will save time for the airline's planners and modernize the pilot-facing web portal. As a consultant for an educational Student Information System, I lead the development of data bridges on behalf of one of my client's primary customers. I streamlined the API code by designing an object-oriented PHP framework that was adopted by my client's employees. I also created AWS QuickSight dashboards for three of my client's customers and built training material to help my client construct new dashboards in the future.

While at home, I refinished the basement, learned how to cook, and volunteered at the kids' school - even running the school library entirely in French.

I cold-called and interviewed more than 40 business owners, practicing active listening techniques to identify expensive business problems that they would like to solve. The idea was to deliver a solution that would cost each business owner a fraction of the solution's value in reduced expenses and/or increased revenue. Initially I explored building a mobile Android app myself, using Java. I then pivoted and successfully identified a problem and had started building a user interface for a web application when I discovered that the development cost was far too high for the industry that I chose. I ultimately decided that the uncertainty of being an entrepreneur was a poor fit for me. Show less

As a physics tutor, I helped local CÉGEP physics students understand how to solve physics problems and pass their courses. I registered a business, Redmond Physics Tutoring, created a website, and learned how to record and edit hand-animated tutorial videos for my YouTube channel, which has nearly 100 videos, over 300k total views, and overwhelmingly positive comments. I also created two free physics courses on Udemy.com, which have an average 4.5/5 star rating with over 1200 reviews.

I optimized household logistical processes, cutting unused expenses and learning how to cook more efficiently and with tastier results. I also started working with Java and Android Studio, teaching myself how to build a small mobile app for my phone.

Back at MDA after a year of teaching, I took on longer-term projects. In most cases each analyst created custom post-processing scripts to manipulate the simulation output into conclusive results. This process was time consuming and tended to require significant duplication of work. I proposed and developed an object-oriented simulation analysis toolbox, using Python, that allowed analysts to pick and choose the post-processing modules they needed and easily add any new modules. I was selected as the Assistant Program Manager’s backup, among a team of 12, to lead in the APM’s absence. In my first year of teaching, I taught mechanics and high school physics to continuing education students. During my performance assessmenmt at the end of my second semester, the dean of science told me that I had the best new teacher reviews (all from students) that he had ever seen.

I was priviledged to contribute to Canada’s space program as part of team of MDA mission operation analysts located permanently on-site at the Canadian Space Agency. I was hired only a few months after space shuttle Columbia crashed, and only two years later I was selected as the lead analyst for NASA’s return-to-flight mission LF-1 (STS-114). The NASA EVA Office awarded me a Recognition of Excellence for my work in building a simulation model of a semi-rigid payload attachment device on the International Space Station. During the mission, I coordinated real-time anlaysis, and afterwards I was selected by the Canadian Space Station Program to hang the LF-1 Mission plaque – the first time this award was presented to a non-CSA employee.I was promoted to intermediate Member of Technical Staff and became the local administrator for our simulation workstations, which were organized into a distributed cluster so that we could run simulations in parallel. As the lead analyst for Flight 10A (STS-120), I constructed a 3D model of the Rectangular Truss Attachment System, characterized the model against data provided by Boeing and NASA, and used the model for a 6-month contact dynamics analysis whose ultimate goal was to develop operational procedures that would safely install a solar array onto the ISS truss. Towards the end of the analysis, I saved weeks of time by proposing a method to re-process existing simulation results. During the mission, the solar array was damaged and I coordinated our team’s activities to support an emergency spacewalk to repair the array, as we worked around the clock to ensure the safety of the astronauts on the ISS.
