Profile bio

About Scott Kemp

Currently, I own and operate Highway 20 Productions which currently operates under four great brands: - Cinematic Solutions - Business Videos and Content Creation - Headshot Heroes - Great headshots in the Corvallis Area - Realiant Photography - Real Estate Photography - Transitions in Time Photography - Family PhotographyI love creating businesses and have done it since the early 90s. I have created three software companies, selling two of them in the process. In 2005, I returned to my childhood city in Alaska and built a 5-star luxury fishing lodge (See work experience below.) I feel that I can accomplish anything because of my diverse background and from being involved with many start-ups that I created and guided through till maturity.I consider listening to others, creating opportunities, creativity, and solving problems with unconventional solutions some of my greatest attributes. I have a deep understanding and appreciation of technology, having built computers and programmed software since the 1980s, including using Photoshop version 1 (They are on version 20 now!). I think this background in tech helps me in the high-technical field of videography and photography.

Listed skills include C++ Programming, Application Design, Entrepreneurship, Html, and 42 others.

Owner

Golden Tree Software

Corvallis, Oregon Area

Lead programmer and owner. I am developing software to make selling on Amazon.com more efficient. It is currently a windows based desktop application that uses the CodeJock library for the UI. I have written 250,000 LOC so far for this project. The application is designed to be an extendable engine so that I can write many more desktop applications easily. It gives me out of the box: postgres database support, reports, dockable panes, saved workspaces, embedded web browers, encryption, Multithreading for asynchronous work. Some of the libraries I wrote for the project (All C++): • Currency – Wraps Intel Decimal Floating Point library to allow for extremely accurate currency transactions.• Persistent Variables – Simple way to make a variable in C++ persistent across executions.• String – From the ground up string library. Supports Unicode, UTF8, and char encoding. 5x faster that C++ standard library for the operations I use. Much more type safe and robust.• File Management – Custom library for managing textual and binary files. Supports buffering, memory mapped files, and encryption.• HTTP Library – Generates CSS 3.0 code and HTML code from C++. (Code writing code).• Multi-threading library. Supports thread pools, mutexes, critical sections, logging and debugging.• Code injection and profiling. This library injects code throughout all my source code and instruments functions which are later used for profiling, memory consumption and memory leaks, providing exact stack tracing.• Amazon MWS and SQS API’s. Wraps the Amazon REST API for ease of use and robustness. Supports asynchronous requests.Uses the following technologies (libraries):• Codejock MFC Library – Wrote a wrapper around, customized, and enhanced C++ library. Uses multiwindow docking, skinning, Report Controls, Property Grid, Toolbar, custom buttons, etc…

Builder/Creator/Owner

Saltery Lodge

Ketchikan,Alaska

After semi-retiring from software, I built a 5 star fishing lodge in the remote wilderness near Ketchikan, Alaska. I grew up there and wanted to give my children a little bit of the lifestyle I had when I was a child. It eventually took multiple millions and five years out of my life to build it. It was six buildings totaling 9,000 sq. feet and only accessible by boat. It can be seen online at www.salterylodge.com. I also designed the web site using a custom content management system in C++. I took all the photography for the web site.I feel this project is a good example of how quickly I can learn something and eventually master it. I started this project with a dream and very little construction experience. I ended it with a beautiful Alaskan lodge and many great memories.Lodge is now for sale.Highlights • Designed and created buildings.• Chose and hired subcontractors for the various parts of the project. Supervised all aspects of construction.• Performed various construction aspects myself, such as insulation, low voltage systems/wiring, painting, and heavy equipment operation.• Supplied transportation via boat to and from the lodge for my sub contractors.• Created lodge business from scratch. Did all marketing and promotion. Managed all employees, entertained guests and captained vessels (Acquired a U.S.C.G. 50 ton Master’s license.)• I created all the marketing (some award winning) materials using Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Premiere.• Created web site using a custom HTML content management system that I wrote in C++. Created the ability to add hundreds of pages very easily, optimized for SEO and usability. It also create an extensive photo gallery section.• Hosted guests (some very famous, others very rich) and showed them the beauty of Alaska through sight seeing and fishing trips.

Feb 2005 - Jul 2015

Owner

Knife Edge Software

I created RealFlight, a model airplane flight simulator for Windows. It became the #1 grossing hobby item in the U.S. Sold hundreds of thousands of copies. I was the president and lead programmer, responsible for business negotiations, primary coding, employee management and everything else that it takes to get a product out the door. I hired a manager in 2005 to take over day to day operations of my company, which let me focus on building an Alaska fishing lodge.I sold the company in 2012.• Programmed in C++ using Microsoft Developer Studio.• Wrote custom rendering engine using Microsoft Direct X (From version 1 to 9). Supported very large terrain, particle systems, transparency, shaders, soft shadows, cloud system, accurate night/ star system rendering, and articulations.• Wrote most of the physics for the aircraft and helicopter systems. Used real flight equations, airfoil and wind tunnel data. User could totally reconfigure the layout of the aircraft and change all of its characteristics and it was expected to fly correctly. Helicopter physics was computed at up to 900 fps in order to accurately model the helicopter blades as they turned around at 2,000 rpm. Tested and approved by world class pilots.• Wrote custom install program and update manager. “Disk Cutter” program would package all the 20,000+ files into large binaries to be distributed on multiple CDs and eventually DVD’s. Would preprocess textures and compress file. • Helped design novel USB radio control transmitter that interfaced with the simulator. Received a co-patent credit on the transmitter design.• Wrote the “engine” of the simulator which let other programmers plug in their modules without disturbing the core engine code. Highly object oriented.• Wrote custom code injection software that allowed me to accurately profile the performance of the simulation to find bottle necks. • Was highly involved with the multiplayer aspect of the program. Used DirectPlay as a framework.

Jun 1997 - Jan 2012

Part Owner/Programmer

Penmetrics

Co-wrote a Windows based GIS data collection system used by large utility companies. It was CAD based with a database component as well. It had to render very large maps (city maps) very quickly to run on “Pen Computers” which were underpowered laptops without a keyboard. Interfaced with GPS units. Written in MFC and C++.I wrote and documented a custom C and COM DLL based API (800+ functions, 20+ DLL modules, 400 page API documention).Responsible for 5 developers. Company eventually sold to Tripod Data Systems, then to Trimble (Large GPS manufacturer).
