I am on this platform primarily as a software engineer, but my main background is in music. I am a studied jazz musician with some classical knowledge, and I specialize in performing blues and jazz, but I am a jack of all trades as well, and I'm a strong sight-reader. I perform in the San Antonio area regularly with various jazz groups.I look to music as an ancient tradition that can inform our new engineering traditions that demand much of the same forms of thinking. Music informs both how I approach higher level architecture and the detail in which I write a single line of code.I learned to program primarily by translating data structures I already knew from music into code. Most musical data and operations can be described by set theory, conditional statements, and modular arithmetic.In a software team, I encourage coding habits that lead to consistent, readable code, even if only one person owns a project. I believe the fundamentals behind clean code and architecture apply to either a one-man project or the enterprise, though I try not to let any specific rules become inflexible dogma. I also believe that human intuition plays an integral part in deciding when and how to improve existing projects, and the need for these improvements will always be a given throughout the entirety of a project’s life.
