About Scott Breen
I have a unique background with policy and legal training; deep knowledge of sustainability and the circular economy; and experience in project management, stakeholder engagement, and communications.I'm a JD/MPA graduate that started my career as an Attorney-Advisor at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and now serve as VP of Sustainability at the Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI). CMI is the national trade association of the metal and composite can manufacturing industry and its suppliers in the United States. My tasks are to promote the can's sustainability advantages and circular narrative; make sure waste management policies do not disadvantage the can; and develop and manage efforts with key stakeholders to have more of the industry's cans complete the circular journey into a new can or other useful, recyclable product.In my first role at NOAA, I was one of four chosen for the inaugural class of NOAA's Attorney Honors Program. As part of this program, I did three six-month rotations in the NOAA Office of General Counsel. They were in the Fisheries and Protected Resources Section, Enforcement Section, and International Section. I was part of the team that received the NOAA Administrator's Award for our work in the process to revise the National Standard 1 Guidelines for the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act.After NOAA, I managed the Sustainability and Circular Economy Program at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation. My role at the Chamber Foundation involved two main functions. The first was as the lead project manager of the Foundation's Beyond 34: Recycling and Recovery for a New Economy. This initiative aims to increase the U.S. recycling rate beyond its current 34 percent with a collaborative, data-driven model that is applied in a local community. I took the Orlando region pilot from data analysis to execution and wrote the expansion plan that received hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding from corporations and foundations. The other part of my role was designing and executing events, trainings, reports, and new initiatives that serve sustainability professionals within our 150+ company supporter network.In my free time, I created, scaled, and monetized a podcast called Sustainability Defined with my co-host Jay Siegel. The podcast has more than 125,000 downloads across all 50 states and more than 100 countries. Through running this podcast, I have gained knowledge of many sustainability concepts and improved my ability to communicate complex topics in simple and engaging terms.

The industry cares about increased recycling because the can (both steel and aluminum) is infinitely recyclable, the environmental footprint of the can is greatly reduced when made with recycled material, and the used beverage cans are needed to make new ones since 70% of the average beverage can is recycled content. The result is that the beverage can is the most recycled beverage container in the world and 75% of all aluminum ever produced is still in circulation today. Yet, there is a major opportunity to increase the recycling of aluminum cans. After 40 episodes, we reached more than 100,000 downloads in all 50 states and more than 100 countries. Each episode focuses on a different topic. The format of each episode is that my co-host and I first introduce the topic in an engaging way that assumes the listener knows nothing about it and then we interview an expert in that topic to provide us more insights. Interviewees have included sustainability luminaries Paul Hawken of Project Drawdown, Joel Makower of GreenBiz, and Kate Brandt of Google.We heard many stories of how our episodes led to listener action. One listener moved to Bangalore to work for Plastics for Change after hearing its Founder interviewed in our plastics episode. Two other listeners in Mongolia started their own sustainability podcast in Mongolian that is patterned after our show format.My partner Jay Siegel and I created the show. President And FounderSierra Club Inspiring Connections Outdoors At Indiana University Feb 2014 - May 2015I started a student organization at Indiana University that organizes and manages the activities of the Bloomington chapter of Sierra Club Inspiring Connections Outdoors. We obtained a competitive Metz Grant from the Indiana University Student Foundation to support our programming of an environmental education series with local youth at one of our community partners and then a related outing to what was learned during the environmental education series. We pay small stipends to IU environmental science students to serve as Environmental Education Fellows and teach the environmental education series. We have trained a number of interested students to be Sierra Club Outings Leaders and run our related outings. Our first outing was in fall 2014 where two Environmental Education Fellows taught the youth at Boys and Girls Club in Bloomington about lakes (what threatens them, what lives in them, how they formed, etc.) and then three of our trained Outings Leaders took those youth to Lake Lemon for canoeing and hiking as well as smores and hot dogs around a campfire. My responsibilities included:-Running many of our trainings and making sure our staff is up to our high quality standards-Working with our treasurer to ensure we are on a stable path financially and thinking of ways to increase our revenue streams-Coordination with our Director of Outings to make sure we are prepared to take youth on outings with proper planning, certifications, background checks, etc.-Establishing relationships with potential community partners and potential partners at IU to help run our programming.
