About Dr Scott R. Fox

Drive. It's in us all. It's what gives us purpose. And my purpose is to conduct work in pursuit of a better world. But how do I make the world a better place?I make the world a better place by working to reduce road traffic collisions, based from the 9 years of road safety experience, entailing a Statistician role in the Department for Transport, my PhD, research roles, an internship, and working in the commercial sector where my knowledge was utilised.I make the world a better place by conducting effective governance, based from the 5 years of working in charity that focused on social causes and a Statistician role in the Department for Work and Pensions, where I analyse financial data to inform policies related to employment and pensions.Fundamentally, the world may not be as we wish it to be at times. But it can be. And with dogged determination, the impact of my work will lead to a society that is as I believe it should be.

  • Civil Service Fast Stream
Statistician At The Department For Work And Pensions (Dwp)
Civil Service Fast Stream Feb 2024 - Oct 2024
    Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England, United Kingdom
My work relates to the Family Resources Survey (FRS). The FRS is an annual report that provides facts/figures about the incomes/living conditions of households in the UK. This experience aligns with my experience as a Trustee for the Big Local (see the Volunteering section).Responsibilities include:* Critically analyse reports before publication to provide suggestions for improvements.* Assessing the quality of both the platform that the public can access (Stat Xplore) and the platform that the FRS team uses to cross-reference data for various analyses that lead to publication. Within this, I also produced detailed suggestions for improvements.* I conducted Outlier Analysis of the most recent FRS data. This analysis explored the data that are beyond a threshold of difference, which if included would lead to potentially erroneous conclusions due to masking the general trends. The purpose of this analysis was to explore whether the outliers are genuine data or incorrect by cross-referencing other data within the FRS and consulting external sources.* The process of conducting the Outlier Analysis was unstandardised across the team. As such, I created a document with a proposed standardisation of the Outlier Analysis process for the team to adopt as the standard. I will manage the team to produce these standards together.* Chaired DWP's section of a conference related to the FRS survey.* Critically reviewed and updated variable information that would be used in grossing the data (extrapolating the data from the sample to the wider population).* Led the FRS questionnaire consultation process. Results would be implemented in future iterations of the FRS.
  • Civil Service Fast Stream
Statistician At The Department For Transport (Dft)
Civil Service Fast Stream Sep 2023 - Feb 2024
    Leeds, England, United Kingdom
    * I liaised between the data analysis team and the THINK road safety campaign team (which aims to publicise road safety messages).* I organised meetings with an external organisation that is collecting seatbelt compliance and mobile phone use data related to road traffic collisions.* I chaired weekly team meetings.* Ahead of the statistics publication in September 2023, I critically analysed various DfT webpages, with an aim to increase readability and coherence.* I learned three pieces of coding software: GitHub, R, and SQL.* After two weeks of learning coding, I contributed to team efforts by using advanced code to provide data analysis, graphs and automated details that were transferred to slides. These slides were presented to the policy team to guide their work.* I provided data analysis to queries from the various stakeholders, including the public, professional, national, and international bodies. I also disseminated the information to them.* I was a co-chair of a professional network within work that organises talks and events for colleagues.* I led the User Engagement analysis of the road safety team's materials. This included survey creation, distribution, and analysis. It also included semi-structured interviews, and Google Analytics analysis. These were compiled in a report.
  • Citb
    Researcher
    Citb Apr 2023 - Aug 2023
    Peterborough, England, United Kingdom
I was employed at the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) to facilitate various pieces of research, which included:* Qualification database- Understandably, comprehensive monitoring of qualifications associated with anything within the Construction industry is vital for directing CITB efforts in where our research should be focused and for the consequential audiences. - Regular updates are required to ensure that any new qualifications are observed, and any defunct qualifications are removed. - I categorised the qualification database for 2022 (the most recent data at the time), whilst also providing a framework for any future updates to automate this categorisation process for qualifications that were already present in prior updates; before I provided this framework, the whole process was not automated, meaning that there was higher potential of human error occurring.* Sustainability- I became involved in discussions with regional heads in the UK about how both the Construction Industry and CITB can encourage behaviours that would help lead toward Net Zero, including suggesting that monitor screen brightness be dimmed to reduce energy expenditure and emissions.- I co-led a research project exploring how basic tech is used in all types of organisation within the Construction Industry, using my research skills to find and summarise material from academic articles whilst my colleague focused on other articles found from alternative sources.* Dashboard- I assisted with discussions related to an internal dashboard that could improve efficiencies within operations, providing my knowledge from my Database Management role as the foundation of my advice.* Wellbeing- I attended a webinar with industry specialists that spoke about the state of wellbeing in the Industry, and how to promote wellbeing.- I attended a Construction Wellbeing conference in London on 27/06/2023 where I made notes and wrote this into an article to be shared in CITB.
  • Road Angel Group
    Database & Mapping Manager
Road Angel Group May 2022 - Dec 2022
    Nottingham, England, United Kingdom
Using my expertise in road safety:* I joined Road Angel (RA) to analyse/update their technical database.* I supervised staff within the database team.* I have been involved with research design, data collection, and analysis of survey data to inform product development.* I have led collaborative talks with an industry expert to develop a bespoke phone app to enhance data acquisition for our database.* Data from the bespoke app I directed the development of is increasing the efficiency and accuracy of our database. As data inaccuracies are responsible for an average $15m loss a year to companies, this app potentially has helped to save the company money. * I helped to establish the RARE (Road Angel Road Expert) club: a co-collaborative effort between staff and customers to enhance our product functionality and development.* I have reviewed RA products, suggesting improvements. These have been subsequently developed and are in the process of being tested.* I have been involved with researching legal information for product development.* I established business connections with a research company (Esitu Solutions) to assist product development.* I have reached out to secure road safety accreditations, including the Road Safety GB corporate membership. Similarly, I have steered the company to use their courses for CPD.* I provide critical analyses of current road safety issues in blogs, exemplifying my expertise. As expertise is fundamental to our road safety credentials, linking with our trustworthiness, and given that a lack of trustworthiness is associated with a 1/3 loss of customers to brands, my work is vital for customer retention.* I attended three conferences, taking notes and relaying this information to RA so that it could inform business development. * My role extends into Database Architecture, where I help the software team re-design the database that the devices use.
  • The University Of Sheffield
    Graduate Teaching Assistant
The University Of Sheffield Feb 2020 - Mar 2020
    Sheffield, United Kingdom
    * Following from the Graduate Teaching Assistant role from the previous year, I returned to this role. *The responsibilities were the same as the previous year (see the description of that experience for further detail), although I also undertook more responsibilities. This included meeting with the course convener before the course began to discuss the pedagogical direction of the term. *I also organised and led a tutorial session to teach the students how to use the game in relation to their assessment. *Unfortunately, due to Coronavirus disrupting usual operation, this post was prematurely terminated.
  • Trl
    Project Intern
    Trl Jun 2019 - Jul 2019
    Crowthorne, Berkshire, United Kingdom
As part of my PhD programme, I secured a month-long internship at the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL). In this role, I contributed to two projects: writing a thought piece, and collecting data in the other.* The thought piece related to pedestrian detection between human drivers and automated vehicles. * I explored the available literature to uncover the current state of automated vehicle (AV) technology. Using my existing expertise on pedestrian detection, I compared the architecture of human vision against AV vision to determine what each does either better or worse than the other. I then made recommendations about what could be incorporated in AV algorithms to improve pedestrian detection. * On the 1st of July, I presented a seminar on this topic to ~30 people at TRL, with additional people listening in remotely. * The data collection related to measuring mobility devices with mobility device users in them at Birmingham NEC on Friday 28th June. Mobility devices have increased in size over the past 20 years, but regulations have not been updated since the 1980s. The aim of this data collection was to update the average measurements of mobility device dimensions so that town planners can refer to them in their future endeavours. *With the assistance of a colleague, we collected data from 52 participants that we approached.
  • The University Of Sheffield
    Graduate Teaching Assistant
The University Of Sheffield Feb 2019 - May 2019
    Sheffield, United Kingdom
    * I assisted the module lead in the Urban Planning and Design department, within a module related to sustainability. * This module used the video game: Cities:Skyline to facilitate the students building their own virtual settlement. My responsibilities were to assist the students with software problems, and provide general assistance for how to maximise their learning.* I also used my initiative to contact the company that makes Cities:Skyline to ask if they would speak to the class about how they integrate ideas of sustainability into the execution of the game. They accepted the opportunity, and the game designer answered various questions from the students, helping to aid the students' knowledge that they could use in the assessment.
  • Nottingham Trent University
    Research Assistant
Nottingham Trent University Mar 2017 - Sep 2017
    Nottingham, United Kingdom
In collaboration with JellyLearn and the DVSA, I was employed at the university to assist in developing and assessing a new hazard perception test, incorporating hazard perception and prediction. * I was responsible for recruiting participants, conducting the experiments and analysing data. * Using the knowledge of ethical considerations I developed in my undergraduate, postgraduate and research assistant experiences, I was entrusted as the primary person to complete and submit the ethics application for the study. * I also was responsible for organising a focus group with driving instructors, helped to create the ideas and illustrations of hazard perception ideas to feed into the hazard perception test development, and make notes/minutes of meetings. Similarly, I wrote a full transcript of the focus group, which was analysed; the quotes of this were linked with the hazard perception ideas.* I was involved with a study investigating the influence of mindfulness on various measures of road safety, including "road rage", hazard perception and eye-tracking patterns.* I was responsible for gathering the video clips of hazards and use E-Prime 2 and 3 software to create a small test. * I was also responsible for recruiting participants by handing out flyers to the public and calling driving instructors/schools.* I established various questionnaires on Qualtrics. * I helped trial each component of the experiment to observe whether they were working as intended. This included eye-tracking software (Be-Gaze) and the driving simulator (Carnetsoft), as well as the segment of the study that I created.
  • University Of Sheffield
    Research Assistant
University Of Sheffield Feb 2016 - Mar 2017
    Arts Tower, Sheffield
Relating well to the research I conducted in my undergraduate degree, I was employed to research street lighting and its influence on pedestrians, drivers and cyclists using psycho-physical knowledge and experiments. Primarily, there were two experiments entailed within this post (the participant task remains the same whilst the environment changes): * how adaptation to light/darkness influences drivers' reaction times* interaction between type/brightness of lighting and density of fog on drivers' reaction times* I was responsible for recruiting and liaising with participants, providing clear instructions about the task and rectifying any concerns that may have arose. * I also helped to review eye-tracking data, inputting fixations of participants on pedestrians (defined by 3 consecutive frames or longer on the video) into an Excel spreadsheet. * I was involved in the design and execution of an observational study investigating the influence of natural light on pedestrian and cyclist numbers before and after the clocks are changed forward by an hour. This involved carefully considering the area being investigated and standing towards two adjacent roads, counting pedestrians and cyclists that passed.* I trained to be an ethics reviewer.
  • Chatsworth Settlement Trustees
    Customer Service Assistant
Chatsworth Settlement Trustees May 2013 - Jan 2016
    Bakewell, Derbyshire
    * I developed hospitality skills such as barista training, cocktail making and the etiquette surrounding answering phones whilst in the Catering department. * I was also responsible for a variety of stations in the cafe: replenishing salad and soup throughout the day; serving a selection of hot food; replenishing the multitude of drinks within the fridge; serving hot drinks; cashiering; cleaning tables, toilets and floors. * I attained a Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate.* I handled cash and had cleaning responsibilities in retail.* I was responsible for opening a variety of outlets on different days using my own supervision including food-to-go outlets and a children's toy shop on site. * I was entrusted to train new staff and handle some supervisory roles such as accounting for how balanced the cash register was in relation to the amount that should have been there, with only minor discrepancies when it was not balanced. * I was also partially responsible for restocking the toy shop, cafe and playground retail outlet.* Additionally, I worked in cash counting with the Finance Department at Chatsworth during the Country Fair every year in summer. Throughout the day, cash and card receipts were brought from different entry gates, where the cash counters were required to count everything. When the entry gates were closed, the unsold tickets were also brought; any discrepancies between the money present and the money that ought to have been there had to be accounted for, so accuracy in counting was imperative.
  • Seaham Youth Initiative
    Youth Worker
Seaham Youth Initiative Aug 2010 - Jul 2012
    Seaham, County Durham
    * I took on youth working responsibilities during my school years, in which I continued attending the group on a voluntary basis afterwards (3 years) before I secured this paid position in the youth group (2 years). * I was asked to undertake a counselling qualification, which I accepted. At the time of completion, I was the youngest person to have ever achieved the qualification. * Using the counselling skills, I was responsible for confidentially assisting the young people within the group with any concerns they had. * I was also partially responsible for supervising the group in activities, such as rock-climbing, swimming, snowboarding, etc. * Funding was also a vital aspect to my responsibilities, where I assisted my colleagues in writing the funding application so that the group could remain active. This was successful in the first application (2011).
