FounderBacklist Books 2002 - 2004I realized that there was huge issue with print overruns in the publishing industry, but particularly among niche publishers. I set up Backlist Books to acquire rights to publisher back catalogues. I would then combine titles from multiple publishers into 'theme packs' e.g. train enthusiast, new poetry etc and then direct market the packs at a large premium to the cost of the books I was buying - generally inventory that publishers had already written off.

Co-FounderTui Club 2001 - 2004While studying I co-founded, with several friends, a social beer club which eventually grew to become the largest national student beer club in New Zealand, with several thousand members and an annual budget funded by DB Breweries. We were pioneers of SMS marketing and several other innovate marketing practices e.g. tap war pub-crawls (designed to convince bars to put Tui beer on tap).

FounderThe Harbourside Market 2001 - 2004Bristol, GbI pitched Wellington City Council on the idea of establishing a waterside fresh produce market in my second year of University. They initially declined, but I persisted. Eventually I was offered the opportunity to tender for management rights of a new market, and I won. I spent many hours driving around the Wairarapa market gardens to sign on vendors and launched what was originally called 'Chaffers Market' after the name of the Harbourside park. I eventually had to exit the market when my final year law studies become too demanding.
