I spent a number of years while still on active duty, in the reserves, and immediately after leaving the military learning the various aspects of the financial services industry. I served as a junior partner responsible for new business development and account servicing. I also witnessed how the senior partners operated and I soon became uncomfortable with what was really going on. It reminded me of poor leadership in the military. Unfortunately, in this industry it went well beyond the senior partners because they themselves were already in too deep. However, I'm not referring to any greed or maliciousness that we see in the movies. Instead there was a general malaise, mediocrity and sometimes even ignorance to their ability and options to identify and offer solutions unique challenges facing retiring senior military families. It was during this time that I was also able to begin looking for resources outside my firm. I read books, went to small conferences, and spoke with new thought leaders about ideas the firm didn't like me talking about. One time, I wrote a basic article about TSP and they wouldn't let me even send it in an email. Something about compliance and the regulators... of course, the fear of making a mistake had become so pervasive that we couldn't even talk about the actual basics.
