Changing careers from a video game QA tester to a Surface Warfare Officer was not a typical career transition but I always valued taking the risks that would make me happy over following clear-cut path just because it is there. My work as a QA tester taught me to explore my creative problem-solving skills and push the limits on processes and systems. Finding where systems broke down due to stress or because they encountered an issue that they were never intended to experience was some of the most fun I have had in a professional environment. Since leaving that industry I have tried to take this approach into any work environment of which I am a part. My eight-year career as a Surface Warfare Officer helped me learn how much I enjoyed leading a team and setting goals. Divisional quarters, for me, was always an exchange, not just a top-down distribution of orders. I thoroughly enjoyed the trust my sailors put in me to listen to them when they needed to ask for help or clarification. As the Assistant Chief Engineer and Engineering Training Officer on the USS Antietam I got to learn how much of a joy it is to watch people learn and grow in their professions.
