After finishing my MBA at the University of Chicago, I went to work helping to manage a multi-billion-dollar equity portfolio in Chicago. One day, after a few years of doing this, I happened to be sitting at my desk looking out my window, looking down on Michigan Avenue, watching people walk up and down the sidewalk, and I had an ‘aha’ moment that literally changed the course of my life.With all the education and financial knowledge that I had, even if I did the best job possible for the portfolio, the chances of my making an impact on an individual person's life were practically zero.
