Senior executive over the dental insurance and pharmacy businesses, including PBM services, retail, mail, specialty and hospital pharmacies, with overall accountability for the P&L, operations, strategic planning and market development. Consistently achieved Pharmacy plan objectives and annually maintained pharmacy costs well below national and regional benchmarks based on Optum and IBM Watson analyses. Engineered the extremely successful, multimillion dollar sale of HealthPartners’ retail and mail pharmacy files to Walgreens in 2020 after a strategic review led to the decision to exit the retail business and focus on the specialty pharmacy. Led the turnaround of the dental insurance business growing membership by 65% and margins from roughly breakeven to over 5% -- became a strategic advisor to the Dental business following the 2013 merger with Park Nicollet. Business development work most notably included: co-leading the negotiation of HealthPartners’ national affiliation with CIGNA, effective January 1, 2007, resulting in regional competitive advantage, national sales success, and substantial medical and pharmacy membership growth; the acquisition of WOW Orthodontics; and leading a collaboration of 13 retail and health system pharmacies to combine resources and buying power to negotiate with pharmacy wholesalers and generic manufacturers, saving tens of millions of dollars annually for the organizations.

Hudson Hospital & Clinic (HH&C) has been providing quality care for their community since the day their doors opened more than 65 years ago. Today, the legacy they have built continues to drive them to enhance health and well-being across the St. Croix Valley. Served on the board and Finance & Audit committee prior to and after Hudson Memorial Hospital joined the HealthPartners family and during the financial undertaking to build out the specialty care clinics that are now part of the campus.

Provided consulting services individually and via an alliance with other experienced senior leaders to businesses in need of executive-level expertise, primarily focused in the area of dental and vision benefits. This work included providing consulting services to HealthPartners, prior to joining the company in February of 2005.

Fairfield, New Jersey

Chief executive officer of Aetna’s dental business, with revenue in excess of $1 billion serving more than 11 million members. Accountable for the P&L, strategic planning, network management, underwriting and actuarial, sales, marketing and product development, clinical and customer service operations, and management of ten senior leaders and a team of 1,480 associates. Consistently exceeded profitability objectives, driven by operational and technology improvements, strong underwriting margins and excellent return on capital. Led the behavioral health division through a strategic review of Aetna’s business opportunities, which dramatically altered the strategic direction of Aetna’s provision of behavioral health benefits. Ultimately engineered the renegotiation of Aetna Behavioral Health’s major outsourcing contract with Magellan, which included a role in their financial restructuring, and the asset acquisition framework to enable Aetna to fully own their future behavioral health solutions. Upon completion of this work, the business was turned over to a full-time senior executive.

Roseland, New Jersey

Executive in charge of the business beginning in 1997, CFO from 1995 to 1997. Accountable for the overall operational results, strategic planning and profitability of the Dental business, with more than 8 million members and $800 million in revenue. Managed network operations, underwriting, dedicated sales and marketing units, and co-led the customer service operations. Headed a staff of 11 executives and managers and a team of approximately 1,500 associates. Achieved number one position in the DHMO industry, meeting or exceeding targets to achieve record-level net growth from 1996 through 1998. Managed and retained a strong team through an arduous and extended sales process that culminated in the sale of the dental business to Aetna in the third quarter of 1999.

Chief underwriting officer for the Chicago operations of Prudential HealthCare Group. Accountable for the overall financial performance across all products (life, disability, medical and dental) underwritten and serviced in Chicago. Managed Prudential’s Richton Park, IL Operations Center, with a staff of more than 600 billing, claim and member services associates.

Minneapolis, Minnesota And Roseland, New Jersey

Ultimate responsibility was as director (promoted in 1992) and lead underwriter for the North Central Group Operation. In charge of development and implementation of NCGO’s underwriting guidelines and multi-year plans. Accountable for the profitability of Prudential’s book of business, HMO operations and new sales in the Denver and Detroit markets. Directed a staff of 41, including 10 management-level underwriters and the Expense Management unit. Began career as a group underwriter and rapidly ascended through a multitude of promotions and roles of increasing responsibility, including a management development tour of duty (1988-1989) at the corporate headquarters in NJ. Led the Underwriting organization through the closure of the region in 1994.
