In my primary role as a Project Manager I lead multidisciplinary teams of 25+ engineers to deliver complex instrumentation subsystems, often as part of a larger international collaboration involving hundreds of scientists and engineers at 20+ organisations. My primary role as a Software Engineer transitioned to a secondary role in Feb/2017, when I was promoted to Project Manager.Design and development of control software for large international astronomical instrumentation projects. Designed, implemented and commissioned software (mostly C++/Linux) for a $20M international project to build a novel astronomical instrument for a world-class scientific research telescope. This required working with professionals from a wide range of disciplines from the initial concept design right through to final delivery. It involved many overseas customer site visits to ascertain requirements from various stakeholders, discuss software interfaces, and perform full systems integration.Designed architecture, defined requirements and implemented robotics control systems (C/C++/Linux) for several different R&D projects. This involved interfacing to many different types of hardware devices (eg. high-performance scientific CCD cameras, waveform generators, motor controllers and other custom hardware), profiling of performance critical code and re-factoring where necessary.Autonomously planned and implemented projects from initial concept design through coding, final delivery and customer approval.Work closely with Engineers, Scientists and Managers from many diverse disciplines in a variety of roles.Web development projects using the LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) and Javascript.Also worked in a Systems Engineer role, writing high-level requirements and subsystem specifications, etc.Designed and implemented algorithms for novel problems on R&D projects.Participated in design reviews and served on review panels for projects which I was not otherwise involved in.
