Over 25 years of experience as both a project leader and self-directed senior contributor, developing mechanical and mechatronic systems, robots, reliability programs, and test equipment. If you want to discuss how Nature- and Forest-Tech can be force multipliers for nature-based solutions to the climate and biodiversity crises, connect with me here on LinkedIn.Specialties• Tackling ill-defined problems, capturing the big picture, identifying the long pole issues, and diving in to solve them with thorough interviewing, design, testing, and analysis.• Adapting projects, plans, and processes to realities on the ground. Balancing low-key informality with the structure and process necessary to successfully complete projects on time and budget.• System-level reliability engineering, crossing the disciplines of mechanical, electrical, and software design to make products as reliable and robust as possible, even in the face of harsh environments, unexpected situations, imperfect sensor data, and abusive users.• Designing “first-ever” innovative mechanisms, devices, and robots.

Senior Mechanical EngineerGoogle Feb 2014 - Jan 2023Mountain View, Ca, UsHardware lead for two experimental robotics projects, actuator lead for a third, and reliability and test leader for a fourth.Conceived, designed, assembled, and iterated upon various robots, including mechanical design, circuit design, mechanical component outline (MCO) specification for printed circuit boards (PCBs), motor and gear selection, custom gear specification, actuator performance characterization, and vendor management.Project lead for various NTI (new technology investigations) in the tablet, dock, and laptop space.Product design engineer on the 2023 Pixel tablet and dock. https://store.google.com/intl/en/ideas/articles/new-pixel-tablet/ -
Senior Systems EngineerWillow Garage May 2008 - Aug 2013Menlo Park, UsProject lead and key contributor to PR2, TurtleBot, and Velo 2G Gripper efforts (more info below), the flagship hardware products for Willow Garage. Led the initiative to adopt best practices in reliability across both hardware and software, including setting reliability goals, planning and facilitating FMEA brainstorms and analysis, and planning and conducting reliability tests including ALT and HALT. This established Willow Garage's reputation for creating reliable, rugged products. As key member of the PR2 Safety Board, created detailed fault tree to flesh out and mitigate potential sources of injury. Performed detailed competitive analysis of robot platforms to inform design and development practices. -
Senior Research EngineerSri International Jun 1998 - May 2008Menlo Park, Ca, UsPrincipal investigator on numerous million-dollar projects centered around electroactive polymer artificial muscle (EPAM) and related technologies such as electroadhesion. Managed projects, led research, wrote proposals, and designed numerous robots, fixtures and circuits. -
"Playa Shark" Bike Trailer ProjectBurning Man 2008 - 2008San Francisco, Ca, UsConceived, designed, built, and joyously operated LED-laden bike trailers for Burning Man 2009. The desert playa is heavily populated with art cars that, due to their 5 mph top speeds, act like (and are often decorated as) boats and yachts. What better foil for these land barges than a school of circling sharks?I modified four bicycle trailers, adding a metal shark fin with 14 rows of LED rope lights that illuminated in sequence to appear to gradually surface and submerge into the playa by the flip of a switch by the bike rider. I designed the circuitry and custom PCB, programmed the AVR, and integrated it into an enclosure with robust connectors.Aside from pyro effects, these were the brightest objects on the playa, and were well-received by riders, onlookers, and "boats" alike. -
Flame FountainResidential Project 2008 - 2008This is a fountain I designed and built for parties in our backyard in 2013. Water comes down, flames come up. Natural gas bubbles through the water and is ignited at the surface. Made use of industrial solenoid gas valves, flame sensors, Arduino, and physics!

Interim Faculty Director, Stanford BandStanford University 1997 - 2001Stanford, Ca, UsI took the reins soon after legendary director Arthur P. Barnes retired after 30+ years of service to the LSJUMB. Highlights included conducting the National Anthem at the 2000 Rose Bowl (even if the USAF Thunderbirds missed their cue), and arranging and conducting "Golgi Apparatus" for the Phish tribute album "Sharin' in the Groove." Over my Stanford Band career I arranged over 50 songs, including the National Anthem, Paul Simon's "The Obvious Child," and the extended "victory mix" of "All Right Now." -
Research AssociateStanford University Mar 1997 - Jun 1998Stanford, Ca, UsCreated a plug-in for AutoCAD for design-by-composition, written in C++ using AutoCAD’s API, ObjectARX. The plug-in allows designers to create parts from primitives and send the files directly to one of several layered manufacturing sites for immediate fabrication. -
Equipment EngineerAtmel Aug 1994 - Sep 1996San Jose, Ca, UsResponsible for long term up¬time of semiconductor test and handling equipment in a production environment. Designed machine components and calibration kits, trained technicians, troubleshot electromechanical systems, implemented tracking procedures for recurring problems, ordered spare parts, contacted vendors, wrote equipment manuals, and laid out the equipment placement for test floor under construction.
