Chief Technical OfficerDimension4 May 1995 - Dec 2012I started out as the Director of Engineering, but I only directed myself for the first year. Gradually, I grew the department to two Software Development groups, a QA group, an IT group, and spun off an R&D group to become its own department under a new Vice President. Along the way I became the Vice President of Engineering and, ultimately, the Chief Technical Officer.Dimension4 went through many incarnations in the 18 years I was there. Initially, we converted customers' paper drawings to CAD models by scanning and vectorizing them with specialized software I helped develop. Later, as the conversion software and our interactive processes became more sophisticated, we automatically captured asset IDs from graphics to populate Asset Management Systems. Next, we captured piping and instrumentation (P&ID) information to populate Plant Lifecycle Data Management systems (PLDMs). In the very late 90's we decided we were a Geographic Information System (GIS) service company and began capturing geographic information from paper and AutoCAD maps, correlated them with customer databases, and populated Smallworld GIS models for utility companies. Finally, in the early 2000's we found our true niche: developing “intelligent” graphics for Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs) for the U.S. Department of Defense. It was in this latest era that we began to offer products as well as services.My role in all of this change was to build, mentor, and direct top-notch teams to develop, implement, and deploy the diverse technologies we needed to solve our customer's problems. Through collaboration internally with Business Development, Operations, and Project Management, and externally with both customers and offshore development teams, I designed and developed software requirements for applications, processes, and products across departmental boundaries within the company and across customer enterprises.

Software Engineer IiiSpacelabs Healthcare Aug 1994 - May 1995Snoqualmie, Wa, UsI researched and developed a new algorithm achieving 6:1 compression of EKG data embedded on a wearable electronic heart monitor. This enabled the use of Solid State Devices for recording the data, replacing bulky cassette tape storage and reducing the size of the device from a cassette tape player to a thin cigarette pack.• Spacelabs was developing a new portable Holter Heart Monitor that used solid state PCMCIA cards instead of cassette tapes to store EKG data gathered over a 24-hour period. • The cards were very expensive, but the end device would be much smaller and easier for a patient to wear without bulky cassettes. • The cards came in 3 possible sizes: 4 MB, which was too small to hold 24-hours’ worth of data, 20 MB, which at around $1,000 was too expensive, and another to-be-determined size in between. • The possibilities were 8MB and 12 MB. Unfortunately, the manufacturer settled on 8 MB, which required the data to be stored in a lossy compressed format, meaning that when decompressed it would not look the same as when compressed. • I researched many existing algorithms, but none could achieve the required compression without destroying the integrity of the data upon decompression, or stressing the processing power of the 80186 onboard CPU. • I developed a new algorithm comprised of a series of templates that compressed each heart beat based on its variance from one of the templates, and achieved 6:1 near-lossless compression in real time. -

Senior Software EngineerCimage Sep 1989 - Dec 1992GeoRec was Cimage's software for automated conversion of scanned paper graphics to CAD models. Initially, the software created models in CATIA, but later AutoCAD was supported as well. The process consisted of converting scanned images to short vectors, or connected line segments, then recognizing the vector geometry as arcs and long, uninterrupted lines. These more structured geometric entities were grouped to form symbols, such as resistors, valves, or any other shape or construct that could be described parametrically. I was hired to test GeoRec as it was migrated from a MicroVax (VMS operating system) to an IBM mainframe (MVS operating system) for Boeing. In the course of developing test cases, I became the prime developer for new applications using GeoRec. When GeoRec was fully migrated and the Boeing contract was complete, I ported GeoRec to SunOS on a Sun Sparc station, integrating with, and output to AutoDesk's AutoCAD (.dwg).

Boeing was tasked to update the P-3 using their Universal Display and Control System (UDACS). Space Applications role was to test Boeing's software as it was developed in Ada. Within a week of starting at Space Applications, I was identified as the engineer responsible to simulate several of the more complex sensor systems on the P-3. In the first month, I was sent to the East Coast to meet with Magnavox and AT&T engineers to discuss how their hardware worked, and how to simulate it when it was malfunctioning.
