CurrentMy previous full-time work at York University involved collaborative research using microsatellite paternity analysis, radio telemetry and miniature geolocators to study female mate choice, juvenile dispersal and survival, senescence and migration in purple martins. Key responsibilities included:-Project manager during field seasons, leading field work and coordinating field assistants -Conduct microsatellite paternity analyses-Run the Biology Department's Molecular Ecology Laboratory-Co-supervise graduate and undergraduate studentsI also taught four undergraduate courses; 266 students taught and mentored.One course I taught at York University was Lab Analysis of Ecological Materials (GEOG 4180), involving teaching students analytical methods for processing ecological samples (soil, water, plant tissues, blood). This course emphasized technical skills in soil geochemistry, including analyzing biophysical soil and plant tissue properties (e.g., particle size, organic matter, pH, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spec, Autoanalyzer, PCR, automated fragment analysis). I currently teach Urban Watershed Management and Biodiversity (GEOG 4541/BIOL 3001) at York University. I created this course as an interdisciplinary senior "capstone" learning experience for students interested in applied conservation and learning analytical field and laboratory techniques in watershed management, restoration ecology and biophysical monitoring. This course encompasses 33 acres of tallgrass prairie, mixed deciduous forest and wetlands under active habitat restoration, and the future site of Canada's first BRE Innovation Park at the Kortright Centre in Woodbridge, Ontario. I used outdoor aviary experiments to investigate possible causal links between male plumage ornaments (black facial mask size, size and colour of yellow bib) and (1) male-male competition and/or (2) female mate choice. I tested if males with larger masks were more aggressive and preferred by females. I also manipulated mask size. Key results were:-Male mask size was the best predictor of male-male competition and female mate choice; mask size may be regarded as an ornament of dual function-There was a tendency for females to prefer males with more colourful bibs Dual function of mask size in common yellowthroats seems to help maintain the reliability of mask size as an indicator of male quality.I also taught seven undergraduate courses; 1,356 students taught and mentored.

My distance education course involving hands-on resource conservation and wildlife sampling, comparing different animal and plant population survey methods and anthropogenic impacts on watersheds.Frankenstein: An Introduction to Liberal Arts Studies was a brand new interdisciplinary course in the UW system that I co-developed with eight tenure-track faculty to help first-year students acclimate to the university learning environ. I taught the science portion of the course (genetic engineering, science ethics and GMOs). 422 students taught and mentored.
