Software ArchitectSalesforce Aug 2018 - Jan 2020San Francisco, California, UsEngineering leader supporting an organization of 34 engineers and 4 software development managers. Responsible for a variety of Salesforce security services including:* Key management (see below)* PKI* Secret Management* Encrypted Blob Storage* Transparent In-transit encryption* Volume Encryption -
Principal EngineerSalesforce Jan 2017 - Aug 2018San Francisco, California, Us* Architect of Salesforce's Key Management Service. This provides a horizontally scalable, HSM backed, high available, durable key manage service that targets a variety of encryption workloads:** Keyless SSL** Code Signing** PKI (Certificate Authority)** Transparent Data Encryption (SQL Server, Postgres)** Salesforce Shield* Lead the effort to implement a managed volume encryption solution for hosts in Salesforce's first party data centers.* Prototyped a Linux Kernel module to support rotating content-encryption-keys for encrypted linux volumes. I also presented a paper on the effort in a lightning session at the 2017 Usenix Security Conference (see publications below) -
Senior Software Design EngineerAmazon Apr 2014 - Dec 2016Seattle, Wa, Us* Reduced the lock contention in one of Amazon's Web Platforms by 1800x. This resulted in a 23% increase in throughput. * Lead the scaling effort following the AWS Lambda preview release, scaling the platform from 200 TPS to 100,000 TPS before our GA launch.* Participated in sales calls with AWS Lambda customers.* Team Lead / Lead Engineer on the AWS Lambda eventing infrastructure. -
Software Development Engineer IiAmazon Feb 2012 - Mar 2014Seattle, Wa, Us* Lead the technical integration of the Goodreads social network into Amazon infrastructure following the acquisition of Goodreads. This included:1. Coordination of development efforts across 5 engineering teams, distributed across 3 sites.2. Design of a high performance, distributed, global, multi-master replication system for social networking data. 3. The live migration of the entire Goodreads friend graph into Amazon without any service disruption to existing Goodreads customers.4. The successful launch of "Goodreads on Kindle" only 8 months after the acquisition of Goodreads.5. Quite a bit of heroics. 6. Earned an "Outstanding" performance rating (top 2%) for my efforts. * Scaled a system from 10,000 TPS (transactions per second) to 500,000 TPS within 7 days. The copy on our website says "Our most popular Authors, updated hourly". I'm the reason why we were able to keep the "Updated hourly" part. Without my efforts it likely would have read "Our most popular Authors, updated every 10 to 12 hours or so". -
Software ArchitectSkybound Software Jan 2011 - Feb 2012CaResponsible for the architecture, design, and implementation of a custom, multi-targeted, pure AOT, version of the CLR (common language run-time). This involved:1. Implementation of a high quality MSIL -> C decompiler, generating idiomatic human readable source.2. Implementation of a generational garbage collector, within tight time constraints. Under our targeted workloads performance was within 4% of the Microsoft implementation, and it was 30x faster than the off the shelf Bohem Collector.3. Implementation of the managed / native interop layer (and associated marshaler).Establishment of engineering best-practices and our dev support infrastructure. This included:1. Introduction of source control, bug tracking, and continuous integration systems.2. Hacking together "message-pumping" implementations of MSBuild tasks for our custom tool chain, to enable interactive builds from within Visual Studio.3. Management of a small team of 4 engineers (a mixture of FTEs and contractors).4. Mentoring and development of junior engineers. -
Software Engineer IiGrammatech Jan 2010 - Jan 2011Ithaca, New York, Us* My primary responsibilities involved work on a "machine code front-end" to a "program analysis framework" used to detect security vulnerabilities in binary executables, and a system for automatically "rewriting" executables at the machine code level.* Wrote a decoder for x64 machine code.* Wrote a tool for safely and efficently rewriting COFF object files, with a design inspired by source code refactoring tools. It allowed arbitrary edits to a COFF file, performing all necessary binary fixups in O(n log (n)) time.* Wrote a parser for MASM assembly code and CL listing files.* Designed and implemented a high quality disassembly tool (better than IDA pro), suitable for executable rewriting.* Wrote a Linux debugger, used to validate abstract machine code analyses against a physical CPU.* Worked on a 1 million + (3M+ counting dependencies) line C/C++/scheme/python code base (mostly C++). -
