During the University summer break, I worked for Scottish Power as a summer intern in the tax department. My work included: analysis of employee expense claim forms, identifying the VAT that could be reclaimed on the employee’s expenses by sorting and collating the claims into different categories. The VAT reclaimed provided positive cash flow benefits for Scottish Power.Although my main role was formatting and XBRL tagging the annual statutory company accounts of Scottish Power Ltd and its varied subsidiary companies prior to submission to HMRC. XBRL tagging is a process that involves attaching XBRL tags to significantly important figures, notes and statements in the accounts. This process enables HMRC to interpret the company information and data in the accounts more easily and allows HMRC to calculate the corporation tax owed by that company. There can be are significant penalties if the tagging has not been undertaken correctly. Working at Scottish Power was valuable as it enhanced my understanding of the format and content of different sets of statutory accounts and the role of the finance department and their responsibilities within a business. The internship also furthered my ability to organise and prioritise tasks and to provide clear and accurate information consistently on all the tasks that I was assigned.

When I was in 6th year I was selected to work part time as an assistant at a small accountancy firm. My role was to: conduct bank reconciliations, calculate the expenses for different business by sorting their receipts into different categories and communicating with business owners to sort out problems and inconsistencies and discuss the work that had been completed. This job gave me invaluable experience working in an accountancy practice and helped me gain the basic knowledge and skills that would be required when working in accountancy.
