About Scotty Dixon
I support the education, skills, and research sectors by thinking and talking about data, especially data that can be used to gain valuable insights into performance and make important strategic decisions, all with the aim of delivering positive change for learners, teachers, and researchers. In particular I look after two of Jisc's business intelligence solutions:- Heidi Plus, the higher education sector's leading data visualisation and analysis tool, giving analysts and managers access to 12 years of HESA data, and- Interactive Insights, a suite of advanced business intelligence dashboards answering key sector questions in the areas of: undergraduate to postgraduate student movement; graduate outcomes; and staff diversity and intersectionality. Business Intelligence Consultant
I contribute to the management and development of Jisc's Heidi Plus tool. I also manage advanced analysis pieces in the form of Jisc's Interactive Insights product, delivered through Heidi Plus.
Business Intelligence Analyst
Part of a project to create a data warehouse and embed a Reporting Service portal at the university. I worked with subject matter experts to understand their reporting needs, worked with the warehouse architect to model data and make it fit for purpose, to then product Power BI business intelligence reporting. The project completed successfully in the summer of 2022, with a reporting portal created over and 100 reports launched.
Project Manager
Initially responsible for core administrative and support functions to the Project Manager, in June 2017 I stepped up into the Project Manager position after a departmental restructure. Responsibilities and achievements include:• Co-leading and project managing a team of up to 14 manufacturing engineer researchers in the delivery of a £1million+ portfolio for customers including Rolls-Royce and Boeing.• Creating and maintaining key project documentation, including creating and advancing Microsoft Project plans, risk assessments, and leading on adherence to AMRC Quality Management system.• Problem solving and crisis management, exploring solutions by leading discussions with technical staff to resolve issues and keep projects running to time and cost.• Stakeholder management and engagement, leading project scoping discussions and managing expectations, communicating project progress openly and transparently, and being the first contact point for customers.• Created an advanced Excel ‘Projects Dashboard’ to collate key project performance metrics and resource management information in place of a dedicated project management software. This is now a key day-to-day management report for the project management function.• Leading a working group to install Microsoft Project Server into the department by the end of 2018, scoping requirements from multiple stakeholders including senior management, leading workshops, and liaising with the supplier to progress the project.
Business Systems Manager For The Challenge Events Team
I was responsible for the streamlining and improvement of processes, data, and IT systems, across the London and regional Challenge Events Team.Through the mapping and analysis of systems and processes, I introduced a number of efficiency improvements to the team's operations. I used project management, process analysis and improvement, and data analysis methodology to change ways of working and drive efficiency improvements, totalling 145 days full time equivalent time savings per year. These included:• The delivery of a planning day and subsequent analysis of the output: 100 barriers to success and unmet needs that were impacting the strategic delivery of the team's wider objectives. I analysed and identified 9 key projects needed to bring greater team effectiveness and increased ROI. These brought in new ways of working, produced new MI and KPI reporting, and streamlined our operations over the next few years, many of which I delivered.• The reduction of the Team Macmillan support journey fulfilment process by 480 hours, or 68 days-worth of staff time in 2015.• The mapping, analysis and improvement of other key business processes, such as sponsorship thanking, and managing their migration to internal suppliers, reducing handling times by 400 hours/58 days per year.• Creating a new data structure for the team's shared drive, improving the team's storage and retrieval of key operational documents, and promoted collaboration through transparency of our stored documentation.• The improvement of Cognos Impromptu reports and use of advanced Excel functions to create new KPI and MI reports, reducing manual handling of data across all levels in the team by several hours a week.• Acting as a CRM expert and super user to work collaboratively on a project to roll out the use of Microsoft Dynamics to the wider business, including training and support of colleagues and regular attendance and project meetings.
Events Programme Officer
In 2013 I was the lead on the integration of the Macmillan national and challenge event teams with a new customer care department, the Fundraising Support Centre (FSC). As a major stakeholder in our work, and handling our supporter calls and emails, I equipped them to deliver an excellent customer service in relation to events. To do this I:• Created a bespoke events training course and trained 40 frontline customer support staff in the handling of events queries from supporters via phone and email.• Set up and managed a system for information sharing through the indirect management of 4 elected events leads, keeping the FSC abreast of developments in Macmillan’s events portfolio.• Liaised with the senior management team to negotiate SLAs between events and customer care for 2013.• Acted as a customer care lead in event project groups, ensuring principles and processes of the customer care department are represented in development of the events programme, and share best practice cross-functionally.I was also responsible for:• Organising event team business systems, coordinating the mapping, audit, and improvement of systems, processes and reference materials to increase efficiencies and better working practices.• Being the communications lead to 150 regional fundraisers, producing a weekly bespoke events newsletter, toolkits, and data reporting, including reporting on KPIs and financials.• Recruitment and line managed the National Events Assistant.I also got involved with lots of cross-departmental work, including representing my team on a productivity and efficiency forum tracking the departmental savings of nearly £1million, the team expert on a project group to bring a dedicated events management system to Macmillan, and being appointed as a Macmillan Mind champion, a group of 'mental health first-aiders' who provide confidential listening services and promote good mental health in the workplace.
National And Regional Events Programme Assistant

Up-skilling colleagues to work more effectively.• Undertaking project work and inputting into wider team strategy through team meetings and project groups, for example setting up pack fulfilment process for walks including managing relationship with third party warehouse, and inputting into WBCM merchandise process meetings both for my knowledge of systems and as a representative of the FSC.
