Worked on three problems related to modelling of crystal growth processes:Analysis of Bubble Engulfment– Studied the observed phenomenon of bubbles entering semiconductor crystals during theirgrowth from melt– Modified source code of open-source FEM solver Goma, written in C and using OpenMPIfor parallelization, to model problem-specific phenomena such as effect of surface shape onmelting of solids and van der Waals repulsion between surfaces– Designed an algorithm to solve a series of PDE-constrained optimization problems and addedit to the Goma source code– Tested and used the modified FEM code to study steady-state behaviour and find optimalgrowth conditions while avoiding engulfmentAnalysis of Temperature Gradient Zone Melting– Studied the use of temperature gradients for removing liquid droplets stuck in a solid crystalduring manufacturing– Created a one-dimensional model of a drop under thermal gradient and used scaling argumentsto identify relevant process time scales– Derived analytical expressions describing time-dependent behaviour of the drop, resulting ina peer-reviewed publicationModelling of Bridgman Crystal Growth– Used FEM solver Goma to model heat, momentum, and mass transport in the making of acaesium iodide crystal– Compared results with images obtained by collaborators through neutron imaging experiments

Worked on developing a mathematical model for reverse osmosis (RO) filtration process and validated it by comparing with experimental data. My work was specifically focused on water filtration units that can be installed at home. The mathematical model used the finite difference method and was implemented in MATLAB. A relationship between the length and width of the membrane used and performance of the unit was show.
