I am a story junky. Ever since my mother read me the story of Pookie the Rabbit – a tumultuous and harrowing tale – at age 4. I’ve been hooked. It’s too late to stop now. I love stories. Losing myself in them. Finding myself in them. Because stories are how we cross the bridge between ourselves and the world and our place in it, and nut out the ticklish questions of who we are, why we’re here, and what the heck it is we want to do with our time while we’re here. We tell stories in order to understand ourselves… then move on. It can take a long time. It can take a lifetime. In the last twenty-odd years, through the Australian Writers Guild, through the screen funding bodies, through the courses I’ve taught at AFTRS, NIDA, Australian Film Base, and universities like UTS or Macquarie University and through my script development business Script Central, I have worked with thousands of writers. I’ve assessed, consulted on, or script edited their movie and TV scripts, helping them to find the meaning behind their story, to strengthen their structure, deepen their characters, bring them to life; to understand what it is that they want to say and how to say it in compelling ways. My aim is to empower and inspire writers of all backgrounds and levels of experience to immerse themselves in the craft of screenwriting, coax out their stories, and help push them on their way to the screen.
