I hold several core values in my teaching heart. These values guide me in my decisions as an educator. These values help me stay grounded and not lose sight of what is really important, my students and their learning. I believe:Learning happens in a SAFE environment. Learning happens when INDIVIDUAL needs are met. Learning happens through SOCIAL INTERACTION. Learning happens when there is a concern for SOCIAL JUSTICE. Learning happens when TIME is valued and respected. SAFETY My students need to feel safe. Safety not only from physical harm, but from bullying and harassment. This core value also goes beyond physical and mental safety. It is important that my students feel safe to be wrong. To get messy with their learning. To make mistakes. INDIVIDUAL I do not see a given classroom as one body of identical learners. I see twenty-some individuals with individual needs, cultures, wants, fears, and backgrounds. It is important that I know all of my learners on an individual basis so that individual needs can be met. SOCIAL INTERACTIONLearning is not quiet. I believe that learning happens when students are given adequate time and space to collaborate, discuss, synthesis, and reflect.SOCIAL JUSTICEAs life long learners students take the small world of the classroom and and apply in the world as citizens. It is important that they realize the uniqueness and preciousness of individuals. TIMEEvery minuet of the day offers itself as time for learning. Time is to be valued and not wasted. If I respect my students time by not giving "busy work", then they should in turn respect my time when it is time to work.
