Elon Musk recently declared ‘I don’t want to be the boss of anything. I prefer to spend my time on design and engineering.’ This is also my view but it has to be combined with finding the ‘shovel’. The people who made the most money with least effort during the Gold Rush were not those who panned for gold and dug mines. It was the people who supplied the picks and shovels.I started games software company in the early 1980’s producing games for the Commodore 64, Vic 20 and Spectrum and quickly realised that the ‘shovel’ was tape duplication of these games. So I bought tape duplication equipment and was soon duplicating tapes for other games developers and record labels one of which bought the company in 1984.From this I moved into developing, patenting and licensing IPR and currently licence technology and ‘know how’ to companies all over the world. This is the role of Norigin Research Limited. We don’t manufacture; we think, design, develop, patent and license allowing others to be the boss of everything else.We recently started a company called Norigin Laboratories Limited with a similar purpose in mind. This company is in the process of developing a range of firefighting materials aimed at providing a more effective and radical way of fighting fires both in buildings and forests rather than by using water. Using water to douse a fire seems logical, however adding water to a fire generates extremely reactive free radicals and water used on, or in a building can cause more damage to the structure and services such as electrical networks and devices than the fire itself. We estimate we are a year away from finalising the chemistry of this ‘shovel’.
