The Tuska UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) Team is a multidisciplinary team of students at the University of Alabama dedicated to providing our members and others with opportunities to gain experience in UAV design, fabrication, and operation. We work with both fixed-wing and rotor-craft. As Vice President I coordinate outreach events, run meetings and educational workshops, work to recruit new members and secure funding. I am also Fixed-Wing Lead, meaning that I am responsible for the maintenance, development, and operation of all the fixed wing aircraft of Tuska UAV.

My freshman year on campus I worked on the design of a fixed membrane wing micro air vehicle (MAV) as a platform for corroborating previous wind tunnel studies that showed increased efficiency for membrane wings at low Reynolds numbers. This project gave me an introduction to wind tunnel testing, aerodynamics, aircraft design and allowed me the opportunity to present my work at the 2015 Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (URCA) conference on campus at the end of the academic year.The following year I was offered a paid position conducting wind tunnel experiments to investigate the possibility that the skin of a Shortfin Mako shark may be able to decrease flow separation. I was first author of an AIAA conference paper that I presented in April 2016 along with my research partner. This paper details how I designed and produced the necessary test apparatus, gathered data and analyzed it to find results. Throughout the course of this experience I gained expertise in LabVIEW, SolidWorks, load cells, pressure tapped airfoils, traditional machining techniques, additive manufacturing, laser cutting, and technical writing.This past summer I was selected to participate in an National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (NSF REU). During this opportunity I worked in the same lab as the previous school year investigating the fluid mechanics of shark skin. Using microscopy and various image analysis techniques through LabVIEW and ImageJ I was able to determine what flow conditions can cause the microscopic scales in shark skin to move, which is theorized to be the driving factor behind the flow control mechanism. I presented my findings last November at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the American Physical Society Division of Fluid Dynamics conference in Portland, OR.Over my junior year I was funded for a project to design mechanical models of shark skin for wind tunnel testing. The models I created are currently being used in wind tunnel tests.
