In this role I provided strategic direction and lead system-wide information security and assurance efforts for the University of Alaska System (UA), the statewide system of higher education for Alaska, comprised of three independently accredited universities and more than 20 campuses across a service area of approximately 590,000 square miles.Information Security and Assurance (ISA) at UA included the following areas: Security Operations, Engineering, and Incident Response; Identity and Access Management; IT Risk Management; Data Compliance; Data Privacy; Records Management; and Enterprise Content Management.Accomplishments included:· Development of a formal Information Security Program aligned with GLBA Safeguards requirements· Development of UA's first Cybersecurity Strategic Plan· Gain executive support for ~260% increase in resource support, including 100% increase in FTE· Expand ISA tooling/capabilities by ~400%· Establish an SOP/Playbook for ISA areas· Incident management and remediation efforts for dozens of incidents and hundreds of remediation tasks· Manage findings and recommendations from 12+ internal and external assessments· Develop shared responsibility matrices for CJIS, CMMC, and GLBA compliance· Design and execute a system-wide IT Risk Management Program· Expand shared governance and organizational IT maturity efforts· Research, develop, and socialize significant compliance management changes to CJIS, CMMC, DFARS, GLBA, HIPAA, NIST800-171, NSPM-33, and PCI-DSS

As the CISO for a mid-size, multi-campus, residential community college, I led institutional efforts related to information security, compliance, and risk management.In this role, I focused on developing a robust risk management program; aggressively pursuing framework alignment for audit and regulatory compliance; establishing partnerships and growing relationships amongst higher education, government, and private sector partners throughout the state to facilitate collaboration, incident response, and procurement efforts.Key accomplishments included the establishment of a comprehensive information security, vendor, and risk management program that has been used as a model at multiple community colleges throughout the state of Arizona. During my tenure as CISO, YC was the only public institution of higher education in Arizona to have no IT- or data-related audit findings. Since inception, the YC Information Security Office was able to reduce its budget by approximately 25% while doubling the services provided and doubling the capacity of several key systems.

As Manager of Web Services, I led a team of creative and technical professionals responsible for the College’s public-facing electronic resources including: web sites, web applications, and related servers and services.In this role, I designed, implemented, and maintained a robust technical infrastructure with an emphasis on security, high availability, and hardware independence using technologies including virtualization, load balancing, and distributed memory caching. I conducted security audits of web applications and databases and managed the enterprise certificate platform. I also worked with the marketing department to align marketing campaigns and to develop content and branding.
