As an experienced finance professional, I have been lucky enough to have worked across a wide variety of businesses, met and worked hard alongside some amazing people in my career. I have learned so much, not just from the accounting manuals, although it is a good start, but from colleagues, clients, customers, peers, you can never be closed to it.I am inquisitive, I like to take something apart and understand know how it works, that could be a bike as a child, a light fitting as a bigger child all the way to dismantling a complex financial model. I am the same with a set of accounts, tax computation, customer contract, I want to know how everything works and where everything came from. I have followed this approach in budget preparations, forecasting, planning and board reporting, even if that means someone counting trucks entering a yard or measuring an oil tank. In the past this has been me.I like to challenge assumptions and don’t mind being challenged, sometimes it is necessary in order to get the correct answer. I feel bad news is really bad news if you ignore it and do nothing about it. I have worked for companies in challenging environments, downsizing in Telecoms in the early 2000s seeking and achieving cost savings of €1.8m in the face of negative customer orders. I have worked for companies who have experienced rapid growth, where the focus turns to capacity constraints which is not just people and equipment. I have managed the finances of a €25m expansion of a plant, which included raising €14m in debt together with additional substantial Government support, all the while the original factory remained fully operational.No matter how hard the task, no matter what time it is, if it is due tomorrow, it will be delivered tomorrow. I have experienced the introduction of the Euro, Covid pandemic, commodity inflation, due diligence, 3 Sap implementations, revenue audits, financial audits, month ends, weekends, sadly and more recently war but thankfully not all in the same day.
