The APT Gateway is based on the Athlone IT campus. APT is the National Polymer Processing Research Centre and is part of the Enterprise Ireland Technology Gateway Network, (www.technologygateway.ie), a nationwide resource for industry based in the IoTs delivering solutions on near to market problems for industrial partners.APT is providing solutions for companies using plastics materials across the medical, composite, recycling and pharmaceutical sectors. APT provides industry with access to:• Pilot and Production scale Injection Moulding, Blow Moulding, Thermoforming, Extrusion and Compounding lines.• Advanced Analytical Facilities for materials research, testing and troubleshooting• Design, Rapid Prototyping and Micro-Moulding Capabilities

Conducted research and product development. Utilized technical knowledge, surface characterization and materials chemistry to resolve product development and operational issues affecting product launches or market established products. Acted as site materials lead for the launch of three new products since 2011 (including Bausch & Lomb’s first new lens material in 14 years and the first new products launched from the Waterford site in five years).

Directed diverse research group providing the contract mechanical testing and polymer processing services offered by AIT to the Irish polymer industry. The projects varied in duration and cost from one day testing to long-term development studies servicing a range of industrial and academic partners. • Provided mentoring and technical input to 6+ doctoral students; assisted students in achieving graduate degrees.• Supervised dedicated and experienced physical and chemical testing personnel.• Designed and fabricated a range of bespoke test devices and custom adapted processing equipment.

Assigned to two international multidisciplinary projects with industry partners. Developed a range of materials and processing solutions for two diverse applications (Electrochemical redox battery and Photochromic medical device for optical applications).• Managed a team of 3 Research Engineers and was solely responsible for the design and fabrication of a chemically resistant yet highly conductive electrolyser insert. Responsible for all day to day project and budget management.• Developed novel photochromic processing technology and novel thermoplastic formulations for optical lenses.
