About Sean Nockles
I find myself in a third stage of my career.During the first part, I was, in many respects, I was a stereotypical “IT Guy”, working behind the scenes, seemingly happier dealing with machines than people. During my time with Oracle, that began to change. As a senior member of the team, I took on a mentoring role. Not because it was a required part of the job, but because I found enjoyment in helping others achieve their goals. When I felt it was time to move on, for the first time I looked at roles that, whilst still technology grounded, were more outward facing. This marks the tentative beginning of the second, people oriented, phase of my career. This blossomed when I moved in to a role within Education at Veritas. Being part of that team allowed me to travel across Europe, the Middle East, to South Africa, and India, dealing with many cultures and nationalities. After 17 years with the company, and undergoing many reorganisations and changes of role, all within Education, I was made redundant, which has allowed me to pursue other interests, working in events, and the education sector.Who knows, I may at some point enter a fourth stage, and actually retire. But I'm enjoying things too much at the moment to contemplate that.
Listed skills include Integration, Security, Servers, Solaris, and 11 others.

I work for the group as an Exam Invigilator at sites around the town. The exams are either traditional paper based, or online, as well as helping those who have additional requirements, such as using a word processor, or need reading/writing assistance.
Community Volunteer
Helping people get to grips with modern technology and online services as part of HTLs Digital Inclusion project.
Shift Supervisor/Event Control/Gate Supervisor
I have, for the last few years, been a staff member at the Reading and Latitude Festivals, and from 2019, Camp Bestival was added to the schedule. The role various by festival, but all are aimed at making sure customers can enjoy the festivals safely. At Reading I’m responsible for managing a team of around 150 supervisors and volunteers. Their role is to help people set up camp when they arrive on site, and whilst the festival is running walking around the campsite giving any help or assistance when required, as well as being a visible presence when the most people would be in the arena to help reduce crime. For Latitude, I work in Event Control. This involves being the main point of contact for Hotbox staff when they need assistance, and liaising with the other agencies based in the control centre. These include security/police, medical and fire services, as well as event management. Camp Bestival offered a different perspective as we were engaged to run the entrance gates, and provide assistance in the arena. I was supervising the team at one of the gates, which was primarily involved with exchanging customers’ tickets for wristbands, tracking the numbers through the gate, and dealing with any issues or complaints. For all of these, as a senior staff member, I’m involved in staff and volunteer accreditation. Anyone working at the festivals, whether paid, or as a volunteer, is required to have the right to work in the UK.

Shift Supervisor
I worked as a Site Supervisor for PMP at an Amazon Distribution Centre in Droitwich (DWR1). Working to Key Performance Indicators, be responsible for managing employees where applicable, supporting the on-site training of new staff, ensuring compliance to company and legal policies and procedures. Build relationships with Amazon staff, agency employees and internal stakeholders.
Sortation Associate/Social Distancing Ambassador
I started at DWR1 as a Sortation Associate (SA)/Social Distancing Ambassador (SDA). The SA role involved taking the parcels that arrive on-site and sorting them ready for collection by the delivery drivers. With the pandemic, Covid-19 protocols were created to allow the site to continue operating in a safe manner. As part of that, the SDA role was created. This involved making sure that anyone on-site (staff, partners, and visitors) was aware of, and follow, the protocols.

Having qualified as a Level 3 TO in 2003 I have regularly officiated at the highest levels of club basketball in the UK, as well as local league, junior, and full/junior internationals. The pinnacle of my career was to be selected as an official for the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, finishing as the scorer for the women's bronze medal game between Netherlands and USA.
Independent Infoscale Consultant
I worked on projects for Veritas in the Middle East. The main project was a residency at a customer in Saudi Arabia. They had just gone through a migration, and the scope was to analyze the environment and recommend any performance and stability improvements, along with helping the staff become more familiar with the solution.
Lecturer
In my current, part-time, role, I teach core computer skills as part of a foundation curriculum for international students, who are planning to take up an undergraduate or postgraduate place at the University of Worcester. This covers elements of the history of IT, use of Microsoft Office, along with an understanding of the security and privacy challenges we face today.
Senior Manager – Education Services
I have responsible for all aspects of Education around Symantec’s Backup and Recovery products (NetBackup, Backup Exec, System Recovery) in EMEA and Latin America. This primarily involved working with various internal departments, as well as those engaged with the partners and customer audiences, identifying their training needs, and putting in place schedules and resources necessary to meet those needs. Those resources include a geographically dispersed group of Education Consultants who front the training events, customizing when necessary.Outside of organizing training, the role included involvement in various projects aimed at identifying and improving the business processes in use, and implementing the Authorized Training Partner program. Within the ATP program I took a lead role is defining, and implementing the process for certifying instructors. This enabled the business to have a truly global reach.
Senior Manager - Course Development
The main task of a manager in Development was to project manage the production of courses. For a major product release, the planning would start 9-12 months prior to release. SLAs with the wider business meant that an internal differences course had to be available 30-45 days before general release, and the main administration course 30 days afterward. Other courses in the curriculum are then fitted in based on available resources. The largest projects I was responsible for during the 3 years I was in the role were• NetBackup 7.5. Drove curriculum changes to incorporate a new Advanced course as well as change the lab environment to utilize a virtual environment. Up to 9 developers involved during the 6 months leading to the release of the Administration course.• NetBackup Appliances. Built up a small team dedicated to the development of the specialist content around these critical hardware platforms.
Manager/Instructor, Education Services
Starting as Senior Instructor delivering HA classes, I quickly added NetBackup to my range. With the acquisition of Precise, my background at Oracle enabled me to deliver i3 based courses. And the Symantec merger gave me the opportunity to make use of my security skills in the classroom.Education in EMEA underwent a structural change after the Symantec merger, and I was made Team Leader, looking after half of the UK instructors. I held that role for around 4 years, until the merger of the SES and TTE delivery teams when I took management responsibility for all the instructors in the UK and Ireland. During this time I continued my duties as a full time instructor.
Business Critical Support Engineer
I originally joined Veritas Support as a back line/on-site support engineer focusing on the HA product set. With the launch of the Business Critical organization, this became a full-time role with BCS. This involved travelling around the UK and Europe, sometimes at very short notice, in response to customer requests for assistance, as well as providing customers advanced information and advice around their day to day activities.
Customer Integration Engineer
Intel Online Services was the web hosting arm of Intel which offered services based on Sun and IA hardware. As a Customer Integration Engineer, my role ran from pre-sales support, customer requirements analysis and technical assessment, to building and deploying the servers, and assisting the customers integrate their applications. The platforms I dealt with were:• Sun Solaris, running as web servers using Apache or Netscape/iPlanet, application servers for customer applications, or database servers in either standalone or cluster configurations with Oracle• Red Hat Linux on IA, primarily as web servers using Apache. As part of the role I became a Red Hat Certified Engineer and a Sun Certified System Administrator for Solaris.
Systems Administrator/Team Leader
I started as part of the EMEA team responsible for the administration of in house systems used in web services (internal and external), infrastructure services (DNS, HTTP caches), Oracle product support, and security in the EMEA region. This involves maintaining and managing the O/S and layered products, such as web servers and firewalls. The primary platform was Sun/Solaris, but others including Compaq Alpha/Unix and HP/Unix are also used. With the growth in the Internet, security became my primary concern and I oversaw the roll out of firewall systems in the UK, Germany, France, Ireland, Spain, Denmark and the Netherlands. The corporate standard firewall was Axent Raptor based on Solaris. My final position was as Team Leader of the Global IT Security Policy and Audit group. The group was responsible for writing and maintaining corporate policies and producing security standards based on those policies. To ensure compliance with the standards, especially on the external networks, we regularly audited exposed systems to test for vulnerabilities.
Team Leader, Resource Management
Being Team Leader of the Resource Management team within the DEC Utility, I was responsible for the Capacity Planning and Resource Management of the banks central DEC systems. This, at the time, consisted of 8 VAXclusters and 122Gb of disk storage in two locations, Brent and Bootle.
Systems Administrator
I was solely responsible for all aspects of support of the DEC systems at the Thomas Cook world headquarters. This included installation, troubleshooting, user support, writing operational procedures and specifying new systems. The core application was to provide holiday and booking information to the branch network via an X.25 network.
Systems Manager
As a member of the team responsible for the support of the central computing facilities, my role was assisting in the system management of a large CI cluster. In particular, installation of software, control of system resources and development of procedures for the administration of the system.I was also responsible for running a user help desk, answering queries about VMS and other installed software, and giving advice on such matters as computer/data security.
Programmer
After a 6 month training course in real-time programming and program design, I held a number of distinct positions.I Initially worked on PDP 11/34 processors running RSX-11M, debugging and optimizing the foundation level software of radar systems. I then assisted in the development and maintenance of a software control and configuration system running on a VAX 11/780. Finally I assisted in the compilation of user guides for a prototyping system.Having transferred to the Displays business, my main responsibilities were the implementation and support of the software control and configuration that had been in use at Plessey Radar, and the design and implementation of a file transfer system to move files from a VAX to an Intel based microprocessor.
