Summer Placement StudentAtkins May 2016 - Jul 2016Thorpe Park, Leeds.During my time at Atkins Ground Engineering department from May to July 2016 I worked on a number of varied jobs which gave me the opportunity to apply the knowledge I had built up during my undergraduate degree and expand on that knowledge by working alongside incredibly capable and enthusiastic engineering geologists and geotechnical engineers. My internship with Atkins gave me a great deal of experience in working on multi-faceted projects, the professional working environment and working as part of a team. Some of the projects which I worked on include;- I was part of a large team carrying out site visits to flood damaged areas in the West Yorkshire area (along the River Calder) to assess flood defense systems, and compiled flood damage assessment reports highlighting weaknesses in the current system and recommending new flood defense solutions.- I contributed to the geotechnical assessment of specialist backfill material and potential sources for high pressure and temperature oil gathering pipelines. I derived geotechnical parameters of backfill material which were used by pipeline engineers to ensure adequate pipeline restraint for the Tengizchevroil Future Growth Project. I also contributed to the geotechnical assessment of the pipeline trench width necessary to avoid wedge failure using the ultimate bearing capacity of a variety of potential backfill sources.- I also carried out a number of administrative tasks, such as assisting in the Quality Assurance checks of submitted documents, scheduling team meetings and seminars and organizing the office library and geological maps. -
Summer Placement StudentArup Jul 2015 - Sep 2015Oliver Plunkett Street, CorkAs part of my final year in University College Cork I worked as a summer placement student in the geotechnical department of Arup, Cork. The internship introduced me to the professional working environment and the pressures which are associated with it. During my time at Arup I was fortunate enough to work on a wide range of projects which allowed me to develop my understanding of engineering geology and geotechnics and apply lecture taught knowledge to the working world. Some of the tasks I was assigned are summarized below;Duties included:- Carrying out desk studies for the Cork City Flood Defense Scheme and compiling preliminary desk study reports.- Analyzing borehole, trial pit, classification test, PSD test, and plate bearing test logs for several ground investigations.- Calculating soil and rock properties and design parameters for a number of different high level projects, including the Riyadh Metro Project.- Compiling geological reports for Irish Water as part of their on-going dam assessments across Ireland, to assist engineers in the visual and structural assessment of water reservoirs.
