I received a Bachelors of Science in Health Promotion at The University of Texas at El Paso and a member of Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity, and a former member of the Health Promotion Student Association. Through these memberships, I have gained leadership experience and have participated in numerous volunteering opportunities in the community. I have volunteered for the Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure, Adopt-A-Highway and run our fraternity’s philanthropy These Hands Don’t Hurt a pledge against domestic violence. These experiences gave me my first look at the many needs and conditions of underserved areas in El Paso, especially issues of diabetes and HIV among Hispanic populations. This motivated me to enroll in independent research, work with Dr. Concha, and assist with her research. I assisted with data management and data analysis using SPSS statistical software and conduct literature reviews. These skills led to employment as research assistant at Dr. Mangadu’s Minority AIDs Research Center (MARC). My work involves assisting with her Mujer Saludable, Familia Feliz (HealthyWoman/HealthyFamily) program and her Rural Opioid Response Program. My role includes data collection and management, focus group work, data transcription. My role also involved giving one-hour long nutritional presentations to groups of women at risk for substance abuse and HIV. Aside from my research presentation skills, I also have worked as a customer representative employee/trainer as several retail businesses. Through this employment I have experience in interpersonal communication and community outreach skills that have prepared me pursue higher education in public health.
