Sean B. Carroll is a scientist and storyteller.As the head of HHMI Tangled Bank Studios, he’s the architect of HHMI’s filmmaking initiative to bring great stories about science and scientists to broad audiences. He directs the studio’s mission, strategy, and editorial focus for both documentaries and dramatic films. He’s served as executive producer on a wide variety of documentaries, including the Emmy-winning The Farthest and The Serengeti Rules, which was based on his book, and the Oscar-nominated All That Breathes, which won to top documentary awards at both Sundance and Cannes.Sean also leads HHMI’s Science and Educational Media Group, which includes oversight of HHMI Tangled Bank Studios, HHMI’s journalism partnerships, and the BioInteractive team, which brings original narrative films and educational life science resources into high school and undergraduate classrooms to reach millions of students..Sean is the author of several books, including Remarkable Creatures, which was a finalist for the 2009 National Book Award; The Making of the Fittest; Endless Forms Most Beautiful; The Serengeti Rules; and Brave Genius. The Serengeti Rules was the basis for the highly honored feature documentary. From 2009-2013, he wrote a column about evolution for the New York Times. In 2016, he received the Lewis Thomas Prize for Writing About Science.Sean is a pioneer in the field of evolutionary developmental biology, or “evo-devo,” which is the study of the genes that control animal body patterns and play major roles in the evolution of animal diversity. In recognition of his scientific contributions, he’s received the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Life Sciences, been elected to the National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society, and been named a Fellow of both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.Sean is the Andrew and Mary Balo and Nicholas and Susan Simon Endowed Chair of Biology at the University of Maryland, and a Professor Emeritus of Genetics and Molecular Biology at the University of Wisconsin.Sean earned a B.A. in Biology at Washington University and a Ph.D. in Immunology at Tufts Medical School.
