About Sean Ogden, Ph.D.
Throughout my scientific career, I've taken great pride in the communication of scientific findings and related ideas. I have 10+ years of direct experience conveying complex research to national and international audiences along with robust experience communicating with clinicians.Along with my extensive experience in scientific communication and medical writing, I also have extensive pre-clinical research experience in endocrinology and behavioral neuroscience. I've focused on several lines of research seeking to understand the mechanisms underlying dysregulated eating, obesity, and sex differences in metabolism. My research expertise includes the planning, design, management, and completion of many pre-clinical and clinical research projects. Many have been written and published in multiple scientific publications and presented at dozens of national and international conferences. My current role as a medical writer for DynaMedex involves the creation of evidence-based healthcare content, specifically using the latest medical research to provide guidance for clinical decision making at the point of care. I also help create and maintain content for the company's social media outreach.Aside from my work, I enjoy hiking and photography. I have a specific interest in capturing wildlife and nature images. I am also training my Pembroke Welsh Corgi as a performance dog.**If you'd like to read one of my articles that is blocked by a paywall, just ask and I'll happily send it!**

Medical Writer
Medical Writer at DynaMedex - Ophthalmology, Oral health, Psychiatry, Palliative Care, ENT, Neurology (OPPEN) publishing group
Postdoctoral Researcher
Investigated the effects of the hunger hormone ghrelin and the sex hormone estrogen on the metabolic responses to exercise and exercise endurance capacity. Specifically, I studied sex differences underlying the metabolic responses to exercise, specifically within endurance and high intensity interval training programs in pre-clinical rodent models.

Doctoral Candidate (Phd)
Dissertation Title: Effects of the novel cannabinoid, AM11101, on food intake, activity-based anorexia, and neuronal activity in brain areas that control food intakeMy dissertation focused on behavioral neuroscience and pharmacology. In collaboration with our colleagues at the Center for Drug Discovery at Northeastern University, I utilize rodent models to pilot the efficacy of novel cannabinoids (developed from D8-THC) for alleviating dysregulated eating behaviors. Specifically, I've focused on preclinical screening of the novel cannabinoid AM11101 for the treatment of disorders characterized by low calorie intake and body weight loss, such as anorexia nervosa. The idea behind the compound was to create a short acting compound with limited side effects to increase caloric intake, enhance energy efficiency, and increase body weight. Initial testing on feeding behavior was performed prior to assessing animals in a translational rodent model of anorexia nervosa. Another component of my research was to determine how novel cannabinoids, like AM11101, may modulate neuronal activity within parts of the brain involved in the control of food intake. The completed work resulted in the successful defense of my dissertation and acceptance of the document. The research has also produced multiple national and international scientific presentations and two publications, one recently accepted in the British Journal of Pharmacology and the second being in preparation for Biological Psychiatry.
Graduate Teaching Assistant
Created new course materials and revamped outdated assignment systems for labs. The updated coursework focuses on training students in scientific writing and critical thinking.Instructed undergraduate students, gave detailed feedback on scientific writing, and presented neuroscience material at the college level. Taught 2-3 classes of ~25 students/class per semester from 2012-13 and 2017-19. Courses taught: Sensation and Perception Laboratory - intermediate undergraduate neuroscience labConditioning and Learning Laboratory - advanced undergraduate neuroscience lab with rodentsAwards:Nominated for 2018-19 Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant100% Excellent for Overall Instructor Rating, Sensation and Perception Laboratory (2019)
Graduate Research Assistant (Master'S)
Thesis: Activation is neither sufficient nor necessary for estradiol's anorexigenic effect.During my time as a master's student, I investigated the relative role of the two primary estrogen receptors, ERalpha and ERbeta, in estradiol's ability to decrease food intake in rodents. This resulted in the successful defense of my master's thesis and acceptance of the document.
Research Assistant
Utilizing pre-clinical rodent models, I completed experiments focusing on the influence of artificial sweeteners/fats on food intake and body weight gain during development and adulthood. The experiments resulted in two publications and three scientific presentations.
