This was a pro-bono lockdown project to support a local business.A climbing wall was suddenly required to provide a booking facility - I implemented a web based solution for them using ReactJS, hosted on Google Cloud using Cloud functions and Cloud Firestore.The initial solution was built quickly to be ready for when they were able to open - with improvements made over the course of a year to make the system more useable and add features.Google Cloud was chosen because… Show more This was a pro-bono lockdown project to support a local business.A climbing wall was suddenly required to provide a booking facility - I implemented a web based solution for them using ReactJS, hosted on Google Cloud using Cloud functions and Cloud Firestore.The initial solution was built quickly to be ready for when they were able to open - with improvements made over the course of a year to make the system more useable and add features.Google Cloud was chosen because the setup time for firestore is minimal, costs were minimal (in fact it ran on the free tier) and the local development environment with emulators for all services hugely simplified testing.This was my first project using a serverless approach.Using React and Firestore together meant that most of the project consisted of compiled static files, with data loaded direct from the browser to Firestore using the inbuilt security model. Cloud functions were only called for processes which updated the database such as booking or creating an event.The project used virtually zero resources when idle but had the ability to scale to high levels of traffic. Fixed price project to build a Web Interface and associated backend to automate an existing manual process to manage the lifecycle of project instances.The backend was written in Golang using the docker API, the fontend was written in ReactJSI was responsible for all aspects of this project - taking the initial spec and manual process to provide a detailed proposal which I implemented, demoed, deployed, and documented.
